1  NannyMUD / Misc / Longest playing session? on: July 04, 2005, 02:52:34 AM
My first ever mud session back in 96 was probably my longest, Dannoc, Sindel and Deathjester got me hooked after a programming assignment in school at around 6pm, when Dannoc got back to school at 11 am the next day, I was still playing Wink I think it became around 18 hours total

Anduril pulled a 36+ hour too when he died a khornes death, played in the same puter room as him occasionally during that time, and the mud-odour defied the air-ventilation I can tell you that much Wink

The worst case of mudding I've heard about is Daddy who, according to himself, stayed awake with coffein pills and played straight monday to friday until he couldn't move his fingers

I always thought Kobayashi was pretty fun.

I miss the days of doing Kobayashi solo.  Shocked I did that with Wanderer more than once.

/Snafu Very Happy

Hehe, go at it then, old man, it's still doable Wink
3  NannyMUD / Nostalgia / Old (closed) Guilds... on: May 25, 2005, 06:39:41 AM
I remember hearing something about mtheads or something like that, you could make your head explode causing fantastic damage, what guild was that?

As to why these guilds were closed, almost in every case it was either because the guild master was absent or unwilling to fix/balance things that was needed after lib recodes, new security issues, player exploits, etc.
Some guilds was saved by hard working wizards like Slakktor saving Cthulhu, Dannoc and later on Barbarella saving Monks, or admins taking over the hard work it means to maintain a guild.

The hardest blow to my mortal playing was when Vincent let go of Hunters, I really liked that guild.

(Btw, sorry to be drifting away from the topic: ring/cloak/amulet.)

Seem like more people could use nightvision, so lets just spill everything here Wink

I know Brom has a helmet with nightvision, the one from Teodor the knight, or what he is named, but if I'm not mistaken it's limited to lower levelled players

Does Alexii got any nightvision except Sensitive Eyes spell in the tome? really hate that spell, annoying players favorite spell (since you go blind in normally light rooms for those who didn't know)

Ring of lies, is it light source or nightvision?

Thanks again for all the light source suggestions, but it's nightvision I'm interested in, not light sources Smile

Thanks for answers Smile

Your right Aeneas, looking for something that I as a simyarin can wear and see in the dark, since Darks with -9 light hanging around green really ticks me off Wink

Anybody know any rings, amulets or cloaks that give nightvision on a permanent basis while wearing them?

Thanks

A newbie club would be excellent, with a bit of effort it could provide support for player quests, from both the newbies and the experienced players perspective. Toplists for both sides could be made to encourage participation from both sides.

Encouraging parties is also something that would greatly enhance the mudding experience, me think, as we discussed on the other note http://spamfunet.com/nanny/forum/viewtopic.php?t=187, where Snafu clearly offered himself to code it <nudge Snafu> Wink

Anyways, anyone who takes command over these two projects have my admiration and support (I offer my help in case it is needed).

Just to add to the discussion, player quests does not have to be restricted to newbies only, it's fairly easy to create an adventure for a higher level character. Tools like dannocs safe arena can help to create a truely enjoyable adventure.

But back to newbie ensnaring. If we had a newbie line, we could use it to give challenges to newbies, for rewards, gold or loot. Who came up with the newbie line idea btw, does the admins know about it?

One alternative to handing out money, that also is fun for the newbie, is to come up with small 'quests' like here you get "20 gold, buy a rope and bring it to me", then you give em some gold, then they usually ask if there's anything else they can do, then you can say, get a level first, then I got an important job for you, etc. I had a newbie digging up and clearing up worms at the trashpile across from the milkbar in no time, and he said he was having a blast.

We could brainstorm here what could be good 'player-quests' for newbies.

Buying a rope was not so good, since the shop with the ropes and backpacks are not on the map, and it is a fairly important shop to know about, but you could say it like this:
"If you stand in the village shop, in 3 moves you will reach the Adventurers' Outfitters, buy a rope and bring it to me."

Another:
"I need some cheese that only can be found inside the Blanka's newbie area, bring me 5 pieces of cheese and you'll get <coins or equipment>. The location of the area can be found in your newbie booklet."

"I need a special wand that is rumoured to be in the village trashpile across from the milkbar in the village. The trashpile can be reached by moving 3 times from green. You will need a shovel that can be found in the Adventurers' Outfitters shop"

etc

Edit: a newbie line is a good idea, a line where experienced players can easily join/leave to help with any questions for a while.

13  NannyMUD / Misc / Apartment rentals in Florida (Deerfield Beach) on: January 12, 2005, 03:20:31 AM
Think if you can find a motel with around $35 / night, you'll get about the same rent as a normal appartment. But don't take my word for it, I've lived in the states for a year, but it was on the west coast, I have no idea what kind of rent is reasonable in florida.
14  NannyMUD / Tips and Tricks / Listening can be harmful on: January 03, 2005, 03:28:26 AM
There can be much to say about admins coding, but this thing is not very eyebrow raising in my opinion. Though not extremely intuitive and intriguing it's one of the death traps that makes exploring dangerous, and in my opinion more interesting. If you want to make me look like an admin asslicker for that opinion be my guest, Maggs. I thought this was the forum for Tips and Tricks, not the I Hate Admins forum Wink

The tip being DON'T DO IT, and the trick being, if you still do it, bring loads of healing there to get up HP after the fall to explore the sewers.

aye it's a dangerous place, no question about that, it's good that we make people aware of this hazard
