If you could be any animal on this planet, besides human, what would you be and why? (If you have more than one favourite feel free to list it and the reason.)

I would like to be a spider, not just any spider but a black widow   not because I have an urge to eat men after, eh.. well you know what.. But it would probably cure my arachnophobia

The first thing that comes to mind is quite simple.

I'd want to be my dog, she has the life!
She's not too spoiled, but people do feed her steak bits from time to time, and those daily hikes through the hills chasing rabbits.  Yeah, that would be the life.

If I would be an animal of any kind, it would be a black panther. Why? They are their own, does not count on anyone else, they watch the surroundings carefully, checking things out before they act and that is sort of what I do too. Specially when it comes to places I have never been at, and people I never met before. When I feel comfortable with the surroundings I can relax and just exist...

Some kind of cat comes to mind, perhaps even just a normal domesticated house cat. That said, a cougar or something more wild sounds a bit more sexy, doesn't it?

I like catanimals very much so I would really like to be a catanimal of some kind...dunno exactly which one. I think the lynx may be one of the most pretty cats ever...so perhaps that would be my choice. Otherwise I guess I could be a bat also...kind of cute little bastards

I think I'd favour being one of the most noble animals there is - a donkey.

If I were to be an animal, what would it be? Hmmm.  Perhaps a deer, no wait, they get shot or run over by large trucks.  Perhaps a polar bear, no wait - they are starving to death due to global warming.  Maybe a salmon, no wait between acid rain and overfishing they're a dying breed too.  Maybe a phytoplankton, that should be safe.  No wait, the hole in the ozone layer is killing them off too due to UV radiation.  Hmm, if they phytoplankton all die, what does that mean for the rest of us animals?

I guess I'd rather just be me, seeing as how everything else doesnt really stand a chance these days.

An elephant perhaps? They are so huge, and they seem to have a pretty simple life, without any stress. I just like the way they look on TV.
A squirrel? (I was thinking of Ice Age ). I should just be concerned about food, that's all (however, that might be a tough job).
Hmm, being some less peaceful animal could be nice too, like a wolf or a buffalo. But only if I knew that I'll be the l334 one that pwnz all the others.

I definately want to be a turtle.. Scoot the waves and just relax throughout my entire life.. Without any real worries except finding food and an occassional mate.. Life at its best?

Very simple choice for me -- An eagle, or otherwise large bird who can soar high up in the skies.

For me, that'd be the dolphin (tropical variety, not any of those arctic ones).  Gliding around the warm waters effortlessly.  Surfing the occasional wave.  Beating up the local bully shark.  How sweet would that be?

Definitely a cat. They have no master, they choose who is worthy of their affection, they decide of their own lives... aaaaaand ever seen a cat sleeping in the sun? Could you imagine anything more relaxing?

I'd just want to be a little yellow puppy laying in a patch of sun. Ah the life, just gotta keep an eye out for my owner sneaking up on me.

GJ and Kherec beat me to the dolphin and eagle answers. I would want to be a bald eagle because it would be so amazing to soar through the sky plus as an American that's the symbol of the United States.
I'd also love to be a dolphin because you can swim through the ocean and dive deep down yet you can shoot up into the air, out of the water....it must be exhilerating.
My third choice would be a trumpeter swan. I read The Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White when I was a kid and it's still one of my favourite books to this day.
All three of those animals get to experience a freedom that eludes us as humans. We can simulate it somewhat but it really will never even be close.
