It happens quite often that I find another player's stash hidden in an unimportant room located in a remote seldom visited area. It can be a rare and deadly weapon or fine a piece of armour, sometimes it is a collection of quest/puzzle-related artifacts. Unless it is a collection of (monetary) worthless quest/puzzle-related items (like a bag full of keys or ingredients to a potion) I drop whatever project I have and start looting. I can walk back and forth several times just to fill all my bags full of stolen worthies. And before I visit the shop to collect my reward, Alvis will have to take a look on the loot. So obviously I have no problems to raid another player's treasure den, but what about you? Do you loot other players stash?

First, Ereshkigal, I really think you need to get help in RL Wink

Back to Opus' question, I never loot stashes. Long time ago, when I had "real" enemies in NannyMUD I did some tricks with some players to loot their corpses and stashes, but that's another story.

For me, it's a bit like kill-stealing, annoying and in 99% of the cases an easy way to "role-play" being an evil bad-ass. But there's also that last percentage that is actually someone being a bit more deliberate and even to some extent adding to the atmosphere in the game. Annoying still, but good anyway.

Good topic, Opus, I hope you get a lot of answers, and some good stories too!

You don't need to comment on my RL or tell me what I need to do.

Interesting, for me it is a way to "role-play" as Indiana Jones Smile

I think it's short-sighted to loot the whole thing.  It's not like I need the money, so I'll usually leave a stash alone, but remember where it is.  In the event that something appears in there that I haven't seen before or find particularly nice, I may then take it, hoping that the owner of the stash assumes that the item wasn't stashable as a reason for its dissappearance.

I have a nice collection of stashing places in a list.  I know that as soon as I loot every item from one, it will cease to be a stashing place.  There's no value in an empty room, is there?  So in conclusion, I'm self-sufficient enough to not have anything to gain from raiding a whole stash (like it not being in Bill Gates' interest to take the time to pick up a hundred thousand dollar bill), but prudently making a list of them over time and visiting them may produce some worthwhile returns.

It's also a matter of pride.  I don't like to get help from others very often, and raiding a stash is certainly that.

Incidentally, Opus, go and find my stash and loot it.  You'll be glad you did.

True. There is obviously always a choice, perhaps several alternatives. To loot or not to loot. To comment or not to comment. What you should know is that your actions have consequences, you are not alone in the universe...

I was simply reminiscing about the past in that note. When I shared my thoughts, it was meant to be a discussion about why people do what they do, about the mechanics of online behavior.  Yes, I have needed "help" in my life in the past. I think I made that clear myself in that note. For you to go and make a flippant comment about the quality of my RL is crossing a line. Obviously, you are incapable of seeing that.

In any case, I'll save my breath.

Ok, if you actually got upset I'm REALLY sorry.

But I see it a lot, that people think they can act how bad and irresponsible as they please when they are online. "It's just a game." But there is always (mostly anyway) a real person behind that online character, and that person can get really sad even for a "silly thing" like a kill-steal or when getting a stash looted.

When is the line crossed? Who is to decide?

Anyway, sorry for my RL comment, I don't think it's my normal behaviour to make insensitive remarks like that. Or perhaps it is, I'm sorry just the same.

I've run across many stashes, some worthless and others fairly impressive, but I've only ever looted stashes right before a reboot, when there's no point in the stash sitting there anyway.  I suppose I'm just a goodie-two-shoes and feel like a jerk if I just take stuff, when I honestly don't need it (I'm not a great player anyhow and don't mind having mediocre equipment, since I haven't taken the time and/or don't have the brainpower to figure out the specifics of "good" weapons or armour).  Besides, if I'm playing my leper or my druid, there are so many restrictions on what can and can't be worn/wielded already, so what's the point?  And the gold you would get from it all is pointless anyway, at least for me.

Now, I have had people take items that were dropped in the room I was in, with the usual comment "It was on the ground, it was fair game" as a reason for taking it.  I'll say I was decently pissed off by that, particularly because the time it first happened, I was in a group that had all died after being unprepared for dragons and giants attacking Vamilio, and we were nursing our wounds in the Church while other friends brought our equipment and gold back for us.  Then again, I was still a new character of sorts, and I took this whole thing rather too seriously.  When you're little and all, equipment and gold actually has some meaning/value to you.  Though now I realize some people like to take on a certain kind of persona because it adds to their character (or because they just want to), at the time it was like someone in real-life snatching the wallet I had dropped on the ground right as I was trying to pick it up.

That being said, I've seen people take things of far less consequence/intention much more seriously (e.g. a made-up word by the Spammers became an inside joke that people went up in arms against, as though it were a war of the "clans with made-up names" Shocked ...of course no one in Spammers at the time had any desire to be confrontational, so it was really quite dumb), so who can say what is and is not taken personally.  And thus, I conclude that getting angry over a made-up word is dumb.  That was the topic of this thread, right? Very Happy

Firstly, what an excellent thread Opus.

I usually leave stashes put to be honest. If there are loads of non unique stuff I may sell it -
we have a safe store room for that, so I think the stasher is trying it on somewhat. I have to admit,
the presence of a 'yellow orb' may lead me to loot :/

BTW, there are times when stashing can spoil things for others too Carrion, especially when the game has
been up for 7 months. I've been trying to solve something lately that relieves on a 'stashed' key.

Good point, Maggs. It's obviously important to know what exactly you stash, and to use it in ample time.

Since my first post I have found about ten treasure dens. It is interesting to see what kind of different things people hide. I have got some good ideas for areas to explore in the future. But I also find stashes that puzzles me.

The next question is: What do you hide in your stash and why?

I use to stash two different kinds of items. As a viking I constantly work on a large pile of armour and weapons used as sacrifices for my gods, but I always empty that stash before I log off so it is empty between sessions. I also keep a small stash of extra stones for viking runestones and a handful of keys or puzzle-related items while I explore an area. But considering Maggs post I feel a little bit ashamed that I might be blocking someone else's progress in an area and in the future I will keep that in mind.

And I always store my ordinary set of armour, sword and light source in the safe deposit.

I don't stash anything, but it made me think of leper stashes and how they're usually rather worthless to the non-leper player.  I have seen people tossing leper-tainted equipment into the trash (this was years ago though), so I suppose that's raiding with more malicious intent as opposed to raiding for personal profit.  Or maybe people just can't stand stuff lying around and feel the need to clean up the mud.
