Being too clever

Ok, things are a bit TOO slow here methinks...
So I'll try to do something about it, a new thread.
A couple of weeks ago my luck ran out. My main char, at the moment anyway, had a bit of cash on him. Too much actually, so Bailiff was a big annoyance. Heck, I was almost physically hurt when that stupid tax collector took his 18k each time he ran into me. So I had this cunning plan to trick him, for several months I had concealed most of my gold in my blackpack. Heh, Bailiff took like 200 coins from me, but that I just laughed at. I was SOOOOO smart I thought!
Then came that moment, some weeks ago, when I per usual had my main earnings tucked away in that black pack. At Tinyani, if memory serves me right, and some RL issues distracted me. I was so distracted that when I came back and logged on again my blackpack was nowhere to find, and what was in it was... Gone.
Ehm, so the gold I secretly withheld from Bailiff, now was "somewhere else".
This is obviously one instance of being "too smart". Any other stories like this?
How much gold? This is really embarassing, but I had 4.3M in that pack. Yes I know, "too smart" is perhaps not the correct wording

I've done a similar thing. The mud spontaneously crashed, but seemed to be up and running immediately after the crash. Since things had refreshed, the bailiff had reappeared and was patrolling Larstown. He snagged 18-19k from me (whatever the maximum amount is), and ran off. Since I was playing my knight and not about to kill him, I immediately put all my gold on hand into a backpack, forgetting that the earlier crash might not be the last of it. Of course, no more than 60 seconds later, the mud crashed once again, and when I could log back on, my pack and the 90k gold in it was gone. At least when the bailiff came by again, I didn't have any gold for him to steal anymore. Can't beat your 4.3 M though, Carrion.
On a more amusing note, I saw a person taunting other players with all their gold by putting it into their pack, only to accidentally sell the pack some time later without having removed the gold. I think the loss there was in the millions.

You probably don't know the player: it was Thefly. He was spamming the green by putting the gold 1k at a time into the backpack, which meant a ton of scrolling. Haha, poor guy though, he was so shocked when he realized where the gold had gone. At least he didn't take the loss too badly. It's just gold, after all.

I've never been "too clever", but I have encountered others doing it. I've found a few stashes where people have kept their cash in a container for some unfathomable reason. It's hardly safe to keep your money anywhere but on you or in the bank, since a reboot/crash or loss of contact with server can occur at any time.

And the bailiff takes 19k max, less if you have a "support the admins" badge.

I know Thefly, and it doesn't get less amusing when it was him

Money in packs, that reminds me of one time when I bought a pack in the shop and found it full to the brim with cash ... Who said things weren't better in the old days?

Heh, that's sweet
Unfortunately I think containers are emptied nowadays when sold

Yeah, they are emptied. At least, when Thefly bought the pack back, it was quite empty.

Heh,
I can't say I haven't done the same with the pack and forgetting the cash is in it. I also agree with Carrion - Thefly's story is quite amusing.
The best I ever saw though (and almost repeated once) has more to do with other unintended consequences of keeping gold in your pack.
As many of you know, the share-room daemon in Camelot has a bit of a drinking problem, and if he can get his hands on two coins to rub together then there is little doubt he will soon be in the pub with his grubby mitts on a bottle of brew instead. There was a similar case of a high ranking knight holding his cash in his pack (I honestly don't recall exactly who it was, and at the time I think they were a High Knight) and getting ready to go. Apparently he used a command that many of us have used from time to time when doing stocking runs for the shareroom: "Store all from pack."
Next thing I noticed was the greedy, red-nosed daemon jumping all over the room screaming something about gold then racing off for the pub, leaving the rest of us waiting and unable to use the Shareroom in his absence. Certainly Mordred (or one of our opponents) sensed this would be a prime time to attack and did so, leaving several knights with naught but their falcons as weapons. We did kind of hope that the daemon would finish his drinks and return to his duties, but apparently it takes a while to drink through 2.5mill in gold. I believe it was shortly thereafter that an upper limit on how much the daemon could drink before being cut off was instituted.

I remember that happening before, with many knights...maybe not quite so much though
The daemon has spent many a night in that pub drinking our hard-earned gold away

Well, one of the biggest amounts I remember the daemon getting his hands on was when a certain RT went linkdead with no equipment on, in the SR just as an attack was starting. The undead attacking actually did finish him off and when the daemon stepped in to clean up found all his cash and headed for the pub... attack be damned. I remember who that was and that the daemon was still going at it a good 45 minutes after the attack had ended. That one wasn't so much a blunder on his part though as a technical mishap.... and I witnessed it, so it wasn't me.
(although I have bought my fair share of drinks for the daemon from time to time, never more than 150k worth)
