NannyMUD / Misc / Player Killing - what happened?
|
on: July 10, 2004, 08:50:55 PM
|
This note was intended on being posted on a board in nanny. But I was doubtfull if it was any poit in doing that. Well, later on I happened to mention it to some old pk'er that really wanted to read it. More time passed and I forgot all abut it. Today I was bored and I hapened to remember it again, so here it is.
Hi. I thought of becoming a pk for a while but reconcidered not to, because if I made myself a pk at this level i would probably make myself a sitting duck to the highleveled pkâs running around. And there doesnât seem to be many of those, rather it seems like there are a few very strong chars around at the top I wouldnât be able to beat in my dreams even. Those thinking of becoming pkâs probably think the same way I think, make my char insanely strong, then, and first then I might think about becoming a pk.
I canât have any problem with this, offcourse everybody should be allowed to make their char as strong as possible. But this can be a problem that has similaritys whith, what I learned today, is supposed to be a wellknown philosophical problem. That the behaviour of individuals, although reasonable, might end up with hurting themselfes. Like in this case, everybody thinking about their own survival and making their pk chars as though as possible, may result or may allready resulted in a group of strong players, sort of a group untouchables nobody has a chanse against. This in itself might make all that though work to get almost unbeatable, almost useless. Cause when this spreads around and when people notice itâs like this, people wonât even try to beome pkâs. Since they know they wouldnât stand a chance anyway. So then there wouldnât be any players to kill for those highleveles pkâs anymore except eachothers and the occasional newbie that doesenât know better every once or twice a month.
I heard similar things happen to other games, not only mudâs. After a while people avoid it, the game doesnât get any new members as much as before, because people know the game has lasted long enough to grow an âeliteâ, and they feel they got no chance as newbies in that world. You canât kill, you can only get killed they think and therefore donât even bother entering the game. Offcourse, in Nanny you donât have to become a pk, which is a good thing. But what if you want to, i bet it would be more fun for you and others if there was, not only more pkâs, but also with different kinds of levels, ranging all the way from level 1 to paragons. This way as a lowlevel char, you wouldnât just feel like a sitting duck, waiting for the paragons to pray on you, you might actually find someone weaker then you to kill.
Like in a book I read, a solution to such a problem can only come from a stronger force (doh) then the ones responsible for this problem. In this case the ones that run the game. They could make it worth being a pk, even for lowlevel chars in one way or another. Forinstance, killing an equally strong player would give much more exp then killing a much weaker. Making it kind of worthless killing every poor newbie that comes a long. I guess something like this is the case allready.
Then I have an even better suggestion, although it might not be possible to make, I think Iâll make a shot at it and tell you anyway. Make the risk being pk enough worth wile that more people will become such in hope to advance faster. You could as an example get 30-25% extra exp. for every monster you kill while being pk. This solution would also have a nice side effect. Low level players would spread around in the world, and it would get more decentralized from Lars Town where they probably would get killed easier. And for advanced high level pkâs it would probably make the hunt for the weaker more fun to. Offcourse the paragon pkâs would also get the extra 30-25% for their kills, making it no easyer to catch up to them, if they go on advancing as they use to. And for the non pkâs complaining about the pkâs advancing to fast: Hey, you can also risk it and advance as fast as they do.
Ok, donât hesitate to reply to this note, wether you think itâs good, or worthless junk. I must admit, I donât know much about pk, but maybe I make some sence? And hey, at least thereâs a new note on this board to read while healing.

NannyMUD / Areas / Favorite areas

Good areasHarthorns: Bunch of stuff to search and explore in every room it seems, at least in the forest, and the caves have nice loot. Can't understand how he managed to make an area with that much stuff, I never get bored in there. Also a bunch of stuff happening while you just stand there, leaves flying around, stuff cracking beneath your feet and so on. Really feels as if I'm really there . Kerish: Bunch of animals to kill . also fun stuff to find in there and a really nice quest that I just stumbeled upon while exploring. As I think I said before, those are the quests I like the most, especially when they fit so perfectly in the environment. Bad areaBansees: Dark (or was it black) knight, lemming, abbess. Need I say more. Heh, people might say "you learn by your misstakes", but that only makes me think "Is it possible to create a monster that automatically brings you down to level 1 when you get killed? Oh, or why not a monster that totally erases your char from nanny, now that would really an even greater learning experience . This note is actually intended to be read by people who are like me, that are more into balanced areas and old fashioned fantasy. But then again, maybe Nanny wasn't created for people like me, maybe it's made for people who find it funny with stuff like an UFO apearing behind some bushes and blasting them to death in one single ttack and stuff like that. Makes me think if I even belong here. But anyway. Now that you know what preferences are about areas, maybe someone could give me more advice on great areas like harthorns and kerish's

NannyMUD / Question of the Week / taking risks

I sometimes test for how long I dare to keep my eyes shut when walking or cycling Ah, did the same sometimes when younger. Also kept cyckling without my hands on the bike. Especially when cyckling a long way, thinking. "Can I make it from A to B without falling?" Got even more exciting when I had to pass sharp bends in the road "will I make it or not " It might have to do with that I had to cyckle quite much a period of time, think about it, rain, traffic noises, same road over and over again. I got bored as hell. I just had to do something to make the ride more exciting. Oh, just to make it clear though, did not have my eyes shut and hands off at the same time, that would be just plain stupid .

Yes, I belive a tell costs you 1 whole sp point . Guildline? Hmm, I also belive there are other ways of chating with people. through clublines or just stand in the same room. But nah, maybe I should give up on all that. maybe it's more fun to just shut up. Alternatively give a cheap sarcastic remark to those few who want to talk, and then shut up. That also seems popular. Just addapt common behavior. Silence is golden huh?

Try chatting for a change. Much cheaper, and the time flyes if you find someone interesting to talk to (not saying it's me). Trouble is that you might forget about the victims resulting in them reloading or whatever it's called . By this i meen chatting in nanny offcourse. Why use irc or something like that when there is plenty of folks to get to know in nanny . A bit stupid with folks just standing around idling. So you go and ask them something and half an hour later they reply: "sorry, afk, was downtown shopping, what did you want to ask me?" Hmm, shure, started idling abit to much myself. But i guess I got influenced by others. It's probably like with politics and voting, (every vote counts) and we all need to chip in or something to make nanny a bit more chatfriendly place . Hmm, pretty meaningless optimism. Trying to make people doing stuff like that never works, so why should it happen here, stupid

NannyMUD / Question of the Week / 11 May 2004
|

Ah. Turn back time. If I only could do that. Most people seem happy about who they are. Well, I'm not. So I would be happy to change a lot of stuff in my past that shaped me into what I am. Shure, it could have gotten worse. But I think I would have taken a chance. The stuff i would change are mostly decissions and ways I was thinking in. Many people also seem to want to take back stuff they did that hurt people. I'm on the contrary. Probably sounds terrible. But now, I wish I was more ruthless, letting my instincts guide me instead of trying to find some lousy moraly good path in my life that in the end didn't leed to anything . Well, it did leed to one thing, to who I am, and I already answered what I think about myself

NannyMUD / Suggestions / Area design or something...
|
on: April 16, 2004, 11:20:21 AM
|
Perhaps I should explain myself a bit. Maximus is quite a new char. I have another one, and I have played nanny for about 10 months now. Almost every day or at least every other day. So, I kind of feel it to be a bit extreme to refer to me as just born yesterday, or something like that. Besides, I think the name newbie is used a bit loosely to. It feels as if you have to have been on nanny for ages to be allowed to call yourself a "normal" non newbie player. One shouldn't have to become a paragon for it to happen, cause that's putting the newbie limit a bit high. Besides, calling someone like me a newbie would be missleading. I meen, I'm far away from the level where I can't find green or don't know how to give a tell. It has happened that 15+ chars asked me for directions, and belive it or not, even a few paragons got my help after they got lost or needed directions. So, by that I also want to say that I can totally understand kherec when he sayes some people "zoom into paragon level". It's ok to call me a newbie though, even if I'm concidering to stop calling myself that, even though it might piss some people off. But It would be cool to refer to those really really new players as something else, like lowbie. That's a wonderfull word I read on a board in Nanny, and I think it would be a perfect word for that. That would also be good for the really really new since people would then take it more easy with them. Cause now you can't really tell how much people allready know when you help them. They might as well have a paragon char but still call themselfs newbies, and that has really happened when talking to a person in nanny. When It comes to quests I can tell Dain that I most certainly am not, or was not, one of those newbies that didn't like quests. It's just that I found them to difficult. Because in the beginning when I hardly even knew that Nanny contained several areas made by different wizzes, then it could be a big problem just finding the quests. I solved the first ones, Keep Nanny Tidy, find book of quests and those quite fast, but then I can say that I had a big paus from questing untill some time when I got to level 10. And belive me, it was an long paus, cause I spent most of the time exploring (my favorite thing to do in nanny) instead of solving quests, mostly because I had bad experiences by just trying to pick out a quest from the questbook randomly. Among the lower chapters offcourse, but still. So, because of this, and because most replyes on my post agreed at least on the point that it would be fun with more easy quests, I ask the wizzes, if they read this. To please make some more easy quests if you are up for quest making that is. Ok, I can understand that wizzes find, like Morild wrote, more fun to do heard quests. But if making easy quests, then you might end up making several of those instead of making one big, and if more wizzez did that, it would be easier to stumble upon a quest while exploring, since the amount will be bigger, and solving that kind of a quest is way more fun then picking out one from the questbook. Isn't it?. Buying qp? Hmm, totally against that to, sorry Dain. It seems as if I'm totally against everything you wrote. But there is at least one thing that I totally agree with you on, and I really like that you brought that up, And that is about writing and posting stuff, even if people might think it's stupid or whatever. Cause like you said, even stuff that aren't so good or well thought trough, can end up doing something good. Maybe it get's someone else to think about the stuff and come up with something better. Besides, sometimes people don't take stuff so seriously, or don't think stuff through. They just write stuff cause they feel like it. I know I do. And then it's not fun if someone tells you how stupid you are or whatever. Hey, does everyone have to be politically and by all other meens correct all the time to avoid sarcastic remarks or something. Eh, not saying it happened on this forum. But it happened to me when I posted with my other char in Nanny. P.S. Was written before Olaftheblues post . But I'll get back to your note next time Olaf
