When it comes to not automatically reclaim uniques, there are ways of doing this (which several wizards already employ). But it isn't the standard way of doing things, so the change would be welcomed (as it would mean it would be the default behaviour).

As for storage options ... as long as items can disappear from your inventory/storage, I prefer the active choice of storing the item. That way when you store or claim, you know what can or cannot be stored as well as knowing when something was lost.

You have cursed and fragile items, things being balanced upon quitting working as it does today etc. Changing that would mean more than just keeping your equipment.

Who here still reads this forum?  Just say "aye" if you're still breathing.

Aye Smile

I'm wondering what the number one cause is for people stopping playing NannyMUD.

It's not any one thing, I suppose.

Having to gather equipment to get going again, after being gone long enough has some part in it. I suppose. Also time is a factor. Whether you like it or not, if you don't have a lot of time to spend playing. It gets harder and harder to motivate yourself to play Nanny over something else where you can just instantly get going and spend your time actually playing, not suiting up or otherwise prepare to actually play.

Anyway, hello again ... nice seeing some familiar faces Smile

Money in packs, that reminds me of one time when I bought a pack in the shop and found it full to the brim with cash ... Who said things weren't better in the old days? Smile

Maybe this can enlighten you on his true self: he was smart, he knew it and he treated the rest of us accordingly. This kind of attitude can often make people call you a jerk. And to some extent they are perfectely right to do so. Of course, everyone changes over the years and I sure hope that he has grown up meanwhile.

Being a jerk has nothing to do with how smart you are. Just because you're smart doesn't mean you're somehow excused to act however you'd like. Acting superior or rude to people makes people think you're a jerk, whether or not you're brilliant or dumb as a doorknob, it makes no difference, you're still a jerk!

Now I'm not saying Michel was or wasn't a jerk, he wasn't towards me. But I do know that plenty of people act very differently online than they do in real life. I know a couple of brothers on Nanny who, in real life, one of them is nice and the other rude ... but on Nanny they act the other way around, the one who's nice in real life is rude, vice versa.

So how people act in real life doesn't necessarily have any bearing on how people act online.

I agree, the hunt has been taking out of the equation, because there's no more need to go out into the mud to get things anymore.

Back in the day, you had to help your friends, or yourself, to recover from a death. That meant actually leaving green to hunt down regular monsters. Traps, ambushes and what not was very common, as was deception and many, many tricks to lure people.

Not who is stupid enough to stand there and get killed on the spot, like pk seems to be today Smile
7  NannyMUD / Misc / Re: Great players, wtf is that? on: January 28, 2007, 11:24:40 AM
Regarding speedwalks. I'm one of those who started off playing nanny in telnet, the kind who had his fingers bleed from all the damn typing in those knight-attacks ... so I know where Terin is coming from. I don't, however, see it as a 'mud skill' to be able to rock the mud playing through telnet.

Speedwalking doesn't make a person a better or worse player, per se. Speedwalking may result in the player becoming lazy, forgetting where things are. But that's not a rule (some forget, some remember, has more to do with the player than it has to do with the client). Taking the car to work doesn't mean you forget how to walk, it just means taking the car is faster Smile

If we're going back to what defines a 'great' player, I still think it is someone who knows all guilds, how they interact and how to make them work (not just max out, but know how to play the guild efficiently, well as much as possible anyway). As for game-achievements, I think exploring the mud, questing and solving puzzles is a direct measure. Xp on the other hand ... not quite. While it takes a lot of endurance and dedication to grind to the point where you reach the higher paragon levels, does it require skill? No. It could be skill, mind, not saying those with high paragon levels are lousy players, but their high levels in themselves, are not a measure of skill.

Few people have the time to become great players though. Some may master a few guilds, but hardly all of them, it's just too time-consuming a task to pull off.

Then there's the fact that we have no idea what other people know, and unless they brag about it or show off in various way ... we'd be none the wiser *grins*.

The Eternal Champion books are not as good as the ture Elric books ... I'd suggest you go with those first and foremost Smile

I don't buy the imagination argument.

Of course imagination is based on what's supplied, but just like there's good descriptions, there's good screenplay in a movie. The thing is, an awesome scene still does not match an awesome chapter in a book, not for me anyway. Because my imagination is limitless, I don't need to worry about the explosion being too big or too flashy.

When I read the text, I unconsciously adapt what I am reading to better suit my own preference. In a way I will corrupt the vision the reader had, but to me, that's a bonus. When I read a description of a dragon, I'll of course picture it in my mind as it is described, but I'll change minor things in my mental image, subconsciously, to make it perfect. Whereas a dragon in the movies usually fails to please me because the graphical designer for the dragon no doubt made one or many fatal mistakes on how _I_ percieve a dragon. That impact is much less when my imagination gets to paint it for me.

Not that many quests? Not sure what you're comparing it to, but I'll take one single quest from nanny over 99% of the world's fed-ex quests any day of the week and twice on sundays.

But yes, text is better than graphics, because a) we already grew up with the text here on nanny, and b) your own imagination will win, hands down, compared to anything a designer may conjure up.
