I often get faint memories of areas, items and monsters of the past. Not being able to remember who made those, or even where they were located...

Just to get the thread going, I'll say Sausagia... I'd guess it was 3w then south from green, with that sign saying 'Sausagia NOW' or something... Not that I really think it was something special about it, but nostalgia just can't be beaten! So, anyone remember it, who made it, and what was it about? Perhaps that was the area with the nazis... Not sure about that though...

Just ripped open some old archives to find this... the wizard was called 'Ketchup'.  The last file was modified November 1995, which may be when it was last open?  Most files, however, were edited in 1990. Smile

The words in question were "SAUSAGIA NOW OPEN - 1km".

There is a nazi.  Also Indiana Jones.

My guess is that it didn't get ported to the new libraries because of the anachronisms and lack of medieval fantasy theme.

The area doesn't appear to be anything special, but as you rightly point out, nostalgia can't be beaten.  Perhaps it's better to let it remain nostalgia and leave this area a memory?

Actually, as far as I can tell this entire puzzle never worked since the area first opened.  The hole-digging is supposed to act as a marker, for example.  And the cauldron would also get eaten by the grass in the place you're supposed to drop it.  And even if that didn't happen, the commands were all broken.

Anyway, I've submitted a revised version of the whole area for review.

Well done, mate!

Surprisingly enough, bugs get fixed faster if you report them in the mud using the 'bug' command instead of writing about them in this forum.Bah! I actually thought I _did_ report it... Well, I'll do my home work this time, master ;)Hmmm, it seems to have been fixed already... That WAS fast!

Atm the server that Nanny runs on is taken down together with several other servers due to maintenance of the cooling system ...
Hopefully Nanny will be back up tomorrow afternoon/evening (February 2nd).

Up and running again ... Seems pretty ok.

Very nice discussion.
How do you feel now that not only multi chars is allowed but also playing them at the same time?

It's a tough subject, a good webpage could help, the current one looks like the whole thing's been abandoned.
If I would know how to, and would have the opportunity I'd also update the design (It is very 90s now. It's ok to not use any modern CMS and keep it all static, but colours, menu items, buttons are probably not forbidden.) and would take a good look on what useful or interesting content can be added (with the least work possible - involve players or use info already existing in the mud).
But then, a site requires constant maintenance as well, the lack of it leads to where we are now. An admin that likes tinkering with web sites would be cool Smile

Maybe something like this could work:
- collect ideas for features, layout, content (you admins, then maybe players, although it's tough to say how many will take the time to look at the current page and think about what would be nice)
- make a final list of what's feasible
- maybe prioritize it
- find people to do it.. if it's something that doesn't require admin maybe other wizards/mortals can do it as well. We're just as responsible of this mud as you guys. I'm thinking of the man page xml conversion project for example, that worked. Smile
- bug people to finish their work, collect it, correct it, implement it Smile

If my post is useless it's ok, I didn't add any less than you two did so far. Smile Just saying, as with everything, it will be only done if someone starts doing it, and for minimizing the work 10-20 minutes of planning it wouldn't hurt.

Technology depends on features wanted, about the security concerns, having the server in the right network segment (which is surely already done), maybe chrooting the web server (I also assume this is already done with the mud), and having daily remote backups with perhaps remote syslog would go a long way in minimizing Lysator's risks... if any of this causes a resource problem I'm sure that can be handled as well.
