NannyMUD / Misc / Re: Michel

Maggs, Michel was banished from Knights so many times that the Guild Heads gave the RTs leave to refuse him entry simply because he was Michel (in whatever incarnation.) He was not very adept at role play. I am sure he holds the record for the number of times anyone was refused entry into the guild. He was, fortunately, pretty easy to spot.
He had a problem with any authority and a penchant for pushing the envelope on rules. I think, deep down, he was an idealist and none of us lived up to his perfect expectations, and he sometimes used that as an excuse to do some of the things he did. That's not uncommon for teenagers. Even so, he seemed to be a very bright young man, a very adept player, and as a person, I liked him. I hope he has done well in life.

NannyMUD / Suggestions / About Wizarding
|
on: July 31, 2004, 10:59:15 AM

I didn't know "a year of existence" had been added. I can think of few creators that approached that when they wizzed or would have stayed long enough to wiz.
The problem in Nanny is not a need for more wizards. There is and has been plenty of talent available to keep the MUD alive with new content and maintenance.
Creative, competent coders tend to be turned off by the stifling atmosphere. Having one's code whimsically changed (often with bugs as the code does not get tested), waiting for months to get permission to add certain controlled types of items, etc. have frustrated and driven off many. The "etc." includes what happens to wizards that complain.

NannyMUD / Wishes and Thoughts... / PK scene
|

Maelstrom created a PK area. It consists of many rooms. I wouldn't call it a newbie area though, and it isn't "safe".
There was also one in Finniadan's(sp?).
I haven't been to either in ages, so I can't swear they still exist. In both, you can lose levels and neither has any safe church.
The problem with permanent PK was the headache to admins due to the numerous complaints it generated. If you truly love PK, visit one of those areas, invite your friends and rivals. Church and Green are so much more peaceful now.

NannyMUD / Misc / QP Req quest (created from tail end of Great Players thread)

On a side note:
One of the nice thing about puzzles is that you can make them quest-like, add a nice reward and not have to wait ages for approval. You also don't have to make changes to suit another's idea of what makes a fun quest/puzzle.
I'm sure my area isn't the only one with these.

NannyMUD / Nostalgia / Greatest Party

I remember that Kherec, I think we laughed about poor Horn all night. I can't remember if I was on with Lys or Melee, but I do recall how furious you were at achieving 2 deaths in seconds (Yay death save!).
And there were all those cookies laying around the gate inside. That's a crazy quest, but great fun for the strategists in the Mud.

NannyMUD / Misc / Great players, wtf is that?
|

To me the greatest players were the ones who learned the mud, solved quests, and pushed the limits of their guild abilities. But the truly great did one more thing. They were fun to group with, fun to be online with.
Working in parties with people like Gilthoniel, The Three Amigos (in any form, those Danes were the best), Eddy and a few others were like being a part of a precision highwire act with pie throwing, and a touch of swash-buckling.
Tenacity, innovation, creativity, humor and a dash of role-playing is what makes the truly great players.
Rhuarc and Michel, from my vantage point, appeared to be simply people with great clients, excellent connections and a lot of time. I have to admit tho, Michel knew how to push the limits.

NannyMUD / Nostalgia / Remember when...
|
on: May 09, 2004, 02:08:23 PM

The luggage is in Gwendolyn's area I think. Which is why it is still around. Twoflower himself left with Prof's area. The luggage is unable to get to the rest of the mud since the only path from Gwen's to the rest of the mud involves a non-standard exit.
I still remember that thing terrorizing me as a newbie.

The biggest complement I ever received for my area was: "Oh, I thought that was part of Leowon's area."
I prefer areas that blend in with the areas around them. The transition from one to another should, imo, be seamless. I think that was part of the aim when the new continent was implemented. Most of the areas there are of a higher caliber than average. It's a pity that it takes so long to travel there, making it another Lost Continent.

NannyMUD / Nostalgia / My all time favorite quest
|
on: April 16, 2004, 01:03:23 PM
|
My favorite quest was one in Prof's area, Merlin's Treasure, I think it was called. It involved several doors to choose from and clues in the form of a logic puzzle to solve. Pick the wrong door and into his meta maze you went.
Next favorite was along the same line, Moonchild's Tower of Games. The floor tiles drove me nuts for a few days. Well crafted puzzle quests are great.
Of the current quests, I enjoy Readis' and Firelights with Aquarian. It has a good story line. Andra & Erendi's quests are both fun. Neill's Build a Guitar and Odin's picture are also good search type quests. Nasi's Paint the Steeple is good for a laugh.

I have spent a lot of time in Andra and Erendi's area. It is one of my favorites. Well written, nicely animated, good puzzles and kills and very nice loot.
I enjoyed exploring Barbarella's area, which is now gone I think. It was a beautifully descripted area, almost poetic. Barb's area had no peer. It had the best room descriptions of any area I have explored in Nanny.
I enjoyed Prof's area way back when. It was the area I first did quests in without someone having me follow them to a room and do some action which made no sense at the time. He had great puzzles and a very interesting area.
Readis and Firelight's rendition of Anne McCaffrey's world is always a pleasure to visit. It is a much larger area than is first apparent. I love their quest to help Aquarian(sp?).
Mordor's bat towers were a favorite haunt of mine as a low level knight. And his spider island always gave me the creeps. It has been gone for some time as well.
Dagoth's area is often a fine challenge, and he manages to change things every now and then so that I need to explore it from time to time to see what is new. It is also much bigger than is first apparent.
Leowon's has fine puzzles and rewards explorers that keep digging. It has some rather deadly areas for the unwary.
Meep has one of the most amusing areas, well worth a look. It is full of quirky characters and monsters.
Those are the area's that come immediately to mind that kept me entertained over the years. There are many more. A big Thank You! to all the creators who have made the world of Nanny such a joy for so many years.
