1  NannyMUD / Nostalgia / Re: Who made it, where and why on: September 20, 2012, 06:01:21 PM
I often get faint memories of areas, items and monsters of the past. Not being able to remember who made those, or even where they were located...

Just to get the thread going, I'll say Sausagia... I'd guess it was 3w then south from green, with that sign saying 'Sausagia NOW' or something... Not that I really think it was something special about it, but nostalgia just can't be beaten! So, anyone remember it, who made it, and what was it about? Perhaps that was the area with the nazis... Not sure about that though...

Just ripped open some old archives to find this... the wizard was called 'Ketchup'.  The last file was modified November 1995, which may be when it was last open?  Most files, however, were edited in 1990. Smile

The words in question were "SAUSAGIA NOW OPEN - 1km".

There is a nazi.  Also Indiana Jones.

My guess is that it didn't get ported to the new libraries because of the anachronisms and lack of medieval fantasy theme.

The area doesn't appear to be anything special, but as you rightly point out, nostalgia can't be beaten.  Perhaps it's better to let it remain nostalgia and leave this area a memory?

Well done, mate!

Thx.  Just waiting for the Vulcanic erruption...

Surprisingly enough, bugs get fixed faster if you report them in the mud using the 'bug' command instead of writing about them in this forum.Bah! I actually thought I _did_ report it... Well, I'll do my home work this time, master ;)Hmmm, it seems to have been fixed already... That WAS fast!

Actually, as far as I can tell this entire puzzle never worked since the area first opened.  The hole-digging is supposed to act as a marker, for example.  And the cauldron would also get eaten by the grass in the place you're supposed to drop it.  And even if that didn't happen, the commands were all broken.

Anyway, I've submitted a revised version of the whole area for review.

The hut in kerish's area.  The plaque disappeared for years but Vulcan brought it back.  OR maybe it's vanished again...

Danny's hydra might have something similar.

Thats a long session. Don't know if 'congratz' is something we'd say to it Wink Long ago were the days when I could stay up that long.

Marriage has a way of slowing that behavior down Wink

"I now pronounce you MUD and wife."

Thought I'd post this, from end of July 2009 excerpts of a chatlog with Vulcan:

 7:08pm
-=-=-=-=-
Me: Didn't think I still had it in me to pull this shit
Vulcan: Pull what?
Me: Finger recluse
Recluse the advanced Practiced Hunter (neutral)

 He is a puny mortal.
 Recluse is a secondchar.
He is logged on right now and has been so for 22 hours 51 minutes 15 seconds.
 Recluse has no plan.
Vulcan: Yikes
Me: I know
Me: Not done a session anywhere close to this since 2003.
Me: My record is 25 hours.  May as well try and beat it now.
 7:42pm
-=-=--=-
Vulcan: I conclude you are having fun with the guild
Me: Not bad so far.  I think it's more that I'm hooked.  I've gotten an opportunity to put all my accumulated knowledge to the test.
Me: I think the real fun will start when I get some of the better powers
Me: I've also stayed logged in because [censored] reward on me.
Me: So I'm milking it for all its worth.  Got 99%  against human males.
 8:00pm
-=-=-=-=-
Me: First bonecrush with bare hands Smile
Vulcan: cool

 12:21am
-=-=-=-=-
Me: I would have way exceeded today's progress if I'd known about the buying items, or bothered to look at it.  As it is i've almost caught up with the highest player.
Vulcan: yeah
Me: It seems I keep breaking through into these hour-long plateaues of calmness where I don't feel any real tiredness or desire for sleep.  Maybe my body is being forced to tap into resources because of how I'm treating it.

 5:28am
-=-=-=-=-
Vulcan: you're still going?
Me: seems so...
Me: I've got to break down sooner or later
Vulcan: yeah don;'t get yourself sick
Vulcan: My record is 73 hours straight assembly programming on a Commodore Amiga back in 1989
Vulcan: don't plan to repeat it
Me: I guess the lack of sleep showed in the work?
Vulcan: well, it was removal of software protection in games during was called as a copy-party
Me: Normally something comes up to make me stop... don't know if you've ever had that experience when reading a fiction book, you have to "come to a certain place" in order to feel like you can put it down...
Vulcan: yeah, or watching a tv series
Me: Um, not sure that's the same thing...
Vulcan: for me it is
Me: I mean put the book down when you're engrossed in it.
Me: You watch a whole series in 1 sitting?
Vulcan: some TV series suspense just never lets up
Vulcan: try watching a season of 24
Me: ok
Vulcan: you must be the top hunter now
Me: Well one guy is a bit ahead of me grade-wise.
Vulcan: who?
Me: kelefane
Me: Now I just dread to think that this session ends with me dying
Me: I mean my  char, not me from lack of sleep Razz
Vulcan: just take a break if you';re concerned
Me: one of the hooks, though not the whole reason, is the [CENSORED] I have, that goes when I quit.
Me: If I "took a break" I' fall asleep and my char would statue off.

 7:00am
-=-=-=-=-
Me: finally I stop.  34 hours in total.

You sure didn't seem to get tired of bugging me about Vader's Razz

Aren't you glad now?
9  NannyMUD / Nostalgia / Re: What old things should we bring back? on: July 23, 2009, 03:03:39 AM
There used to be an area close to where Qqqq's and Profezzorn's areas meet. A tiny one and I only remember one or two npcs. I think it disappeared into the void when Profezzorn's area was removed and I have always been curious about that one. But most of your stuff is much higher on the priority list than this one Smile

Slakktor removed his area some years ago and he said it would never return. Since we have a change in the administration, maybe someone can make him change his mind? I remember his area as absolute top quality!

I talked to Slakktor and he said he was willing to allow his area to return, and he would login and sort it out.  The next day he told me he forgot after I asked him, and to keep reminding him!  This continued for several days after which I got tired of it.  This was a year ago, and he no longer seems to login to ICQ.

I have a small list of old areas and guilds to bring back from the past. Post your own suggestions for what to bring back in this thread. If I can't locate what you are suggesting I may need your help to track down the source code.

Right now I'm working on Slater's area with the "Catch a fish and cook it" quest. Here are other things on my list (not in priority order):

Garion's area (Belgariad quest)
Kitten's guild (no ETA on this one, guild needs redesign)
Aita's area (with the skeleton quest and puzzles that linked it to Moonchild's tower)
Lectral's area
Simyarin redesign (this is Gabe's project, and I've helped a bit, but his whereabouts is unknown to me)

Other areas mentioned to me are:

Aleea's (she deleted it so the source code needs to be recovered from her, or extracted from a backup if we knew a point in time where it existed fully before deletion coupled with her permission to reopen due to copyright laws)

Gruhl's (he deleted this area over 10 years ago and I tried contacting him via email, but no-go so far, it's the area with GLEEP the dragon)

Astrodeath is also working on The Hunter's guild which is not too far from completion.

I'd like to put in more ideas, but my memory only extends back as far as 2000 and I thiknk you've covered all the bases there. Smile

But if I can loose a special item only one or two hours after I log off, what is the difference from the situation today?

You might not.
12  NannyMUD / Misc / Re: Still here? on: July 20, 2009, 03:19:01 PM
Number 2, no doubt. There should be a risk to enter some areas or fight some monsters. It should cost to quit in dangerous situations. This would also be a way for certain items to return to the loop if wizards choose not to fetch back items stored in the locker (see my previous post).

Fair point.  I didn't actually consider quitting out and losing your eq.

I personally think _all_ uniques should have _some_ sort of reclaiming on them.  My favoured version is moving the item back once the owning monster is killed again (and it isn't in use).  That way you can hold onto the item but it doesn't get in the way of other people getting it.

As for non-uniques, a system of item deterioration has been suggested.  I think right now the best of the average equipment is too easy to get and you can hang onto it for a long time.
13  NannyMUD / Misc / Re: Still here? on: July 20, 2009, 10:34:38 AM
Given the choice (this question is for everyone), which do you prefer the idea of:

1.  Inventory-saving.  Effectively/invisibly, when you quit out your inventory (but not deep inventory, i.e. container contents) is moved to a secret room and tagged as yours--when you log in it is moved back to you.  Reclaiming rules still apply to items that do that so you may lose your equipment.  You are forced to choose which items you want to hang onto if you have stuff in packs.

2.  A similar thing but you have to store your items in the storeroom manually, otherwise it is more-or-less the same, perhaps with a limit on number of items stored attached to it.

I favour the first, Vulcan favours the second because it is more in keeping with what we have now.  Which do you prefer?
14  NannyMUD / Misc / Re: Still here? on: July 19, 2009, 05:59:33 AM
I would like to see permanent storage of both unique and non-unique equipment. I think that would not only help suckers like me to find it easier to spend that hour playing Nanny, it would probably also make the game more interesting for active players. Think of the effects on the economy of the game. In the old days it was worth spending four hours only to get a special weapon or piece of armor because you knew one of the other 60+ players would pay 150k+ in an auction for it. And when you logged back 24 hours later the same piece of weapon was still circulating among players. Today the number of players limits the demand and in many cases there are not even players online to buy your new artifact. With permanent storage of unique-equipment demand would increase as you could sell it later and it would of course be easier to motivate yourself to find something rare for yourself.

Sounds good.  I think one would have to draw the line at things in containers, though.  It would be too unbalancing as you could hoard so many things.

I think this idea would work.  The rules for reclaiming still apply when you're logged off (as if it were lying around on the ground somewhere), so it's essentially eliminating the need for you to get it every time you login.
15  NannyMUD / Misc / Re: Still here? on: July 18, 2009, 02:55:02 PM
Hmm, now THAT I didn't expect to come up.  I've never had a problem finding stashes, but I suppose there are a finite amount in the game (and I know a great many other people's).  Opus, how can you be a noob and the second-highest quester?

I suppose if we can do multiplaying we can do permanent eq for non-unique equipment, and maybe even unique equipment (reclaiming would still apply when the person is logged out!).
