Title: My all time favorite quest
Post by: Morild on April 14, 2004, 03:04:50 AM
I was a bit unsure about where this thread would fit in, but I thought this place might work. I am not sure if there are many old quests that have been removed from the game?
I can think of one I solved where I really had my keyboard touch speed tested, and it made me dance all night long. Anyone who knows of what quest I am talking?

But my all time favourite quest is “The Asylum Quest”.

might be Slakktor's quest with the dancing vampire. gone now since Slakktor retired.

When it comes to the best, well-made quests, I'd pick either of Andra's and Erendi's, or Readis' and Firelight's quests. They are all excellent.

When it comes to the quest I enjoy the most solving, that I still enjoy solving with one of my other chars is Light up the night, by Banshee and Brom. Additionally there's always the thrill of doing the highest ranked quest, Inspire Zeus and Discover Revenge.

I just love all 4 Bixby's quests. Hehe maybe because they are so math related? ;)

Title: Old quests...
Post by: Snafu on April 14, 2004, 11:13:05 AM
I can think of many old quests and even more removed...I can probably list over 40 removed quests...(maybe)...I haven't tried to compare recently but it wouldn't surprise me...I DO have lists of quests somewhere and by lists...I mean lists of names, not solutions  :P ...

Actually, 40 shouldn't be far off...as Profezzorn had over 6 or 7 I believe...one day, if encouraged enough, I may try to list the old quests, etc.

Maybe there should be one thread for old quests and another for favorite quests? I miss and loved Akasha's bonzai quest and I am sure there are tons of older players who will totally agree.

I know some people hate this quest but I've always had a soft spot for Nasigoreng's Hunt The Rabbits.  I think I created a character or 2 just to do it again   :D

imho nothing compares with a good old fashioned dragon hunt. or to slay that evil lag.

I'm glad that they brought Slay Lag back...it was originally Randalar and Ppannion, but when Ppannion closed his area...it went away...

I will always love Aphrodyte's "Axil's Funnyhouse" Quest. I miss that cute little monster.
As for the quests that are still around I really like "Make a Collection of Paintings" by Anna. Probably because I was lucky and created a list that only needed two modifications before Stephen accepted it. Another favourite is Leowon's "Help Lorn prepare for Pogo's visit". I guess I love these because they force me to explore the mud a bit more which is always a good thing.
I'm sure I'd love Mirage's if I completed it but I got very, very frustrated and an attack was due so I left. (This was as Poesia).
I also like quests where you have to team up with people like "Paint the Steeple", "A tree has fallen across the path", "Kobayashi" and "Raid a Castle".
Hmm, I guess I should go questing more and try to really start Andra's and Erendi's quests...I am not so good at questing    (yeah, yeah, I could probably improve by doing it) so we'll see.
/P the possible future quester

Some people haven't been around that long, remember nostalgia is relevant to what you've experienced ;)

Wow, the Paint the Monsters quest... I remember my old friend Aeneas (I think it was him) once wanted to try a picture of Pet so we got all this fire resistant eq and I would try to defend him while he painted.  We gave up after 2 or 3 tries...

My favorite quest was one in Prof's area, Merlin's Treasure, I think it was called. It involved several doors to choose from and clues in the form of a logic puzzle to solve. Pick the wrong door and into his meta maze you went.

Next favorite was along the same line, Moonchild's Tower of Games. The floor tiles drove me nuts for a few days. Well crafted puzzle quests are great.

Of the current quests, I enjoy Readis' and Firelights with Aquarian. It has a good story line. Andra & Erendi's quests are both fun. Neill's Build a Guitar and Odin's picture are also good search type quests. Nasi's Paint the Steeple is good for a laugh.

I believe what Iceblink meant was that this quest was originally Tanya's and then mercilessly ripped off to its current form.

I miss Tanya's other quests as well.

This is exactly what I meant.  That quest was Tanya's.  It was pretty much exactly the same concept.  An NPC of some sort for each letter.

Anna changed a few things, made it harder... and then called it her own.  That was seriously wrong.

I don't know why people let her get away with it.

Banshee has changed a lot of quests in her day.  But she has the courtesy to leave the credit unchanged.  Anna's modification was like someone paraphrasing Harry Potter, changing the name to Harry Botter, expanding it by 30 pages, and sticking her own name on it.

And Tanya's other quests were definitely quality.  I absolutely loved the one where you had to escape from that room.  That kind of exploration is exactly what I love.

Let's see... since we're on the subject...

My favorites:

Tanya's escape quest... from jail???
Year of Banshee
Tower of Games
Funny House
Tower of Celeborn (BEFORE it was changed)
Aw, hell... I love it.... Pilgrimage to Canterbury

I know there are more, but I can't think of them offhand.

The nostalgia daemon takes me again... I'd love to do 'Raistlin(g) live ones' again, pretty fun and with some heavy duty 'use the exact not so easy to find words' to be used in the end.

Not that I really think it's the best of quests though...

Don't forget Badman's Bicycle quest!

Then there was Tulkas Riddle Hut, which went from Quest to puzzle...and a deadly one at that...and then was removed! wah! *grin*

Funny house, if it was that at (I think Proffezzorn's?) area.. with that pink dragon and stuff if I'm not wrong (I barely remember, solved it in '96 I believe, or in '97 max). It was my first quest I did alone, that's why I like(d) it (I dont't remember much of it unfortunately but I liked it back then, my oldest char has it for sure).
I liked Cross the Street, it was a quest you really could solve easily just by looking around and I found it entertaining. I also like Bixby's quests, the 3 math ones, those are pretty easy, I mean you can find all the hints. I do have a problem in questing as many times I just get stuck because can't find any new clues...
There are some others I like for sure, just don't remember now (5:50 am).

No, it was Axil's Fun House.

Yes, it was Tanya's Escape From Prison.

I think my favorite was Moonchild's Save the Land from Evil quest. It was years before anyone solved it, and at the end you got a WC 22 weapon, which was unheard of (aside from the WC 25 Grand Master karate at the time   ).

And c'mon, you know you all loved Vincent's quests.

I can't remember what Tanya's camera quest was called. I think it was 'Make a present for Dr Wierd/Zany' or something. Can anyone help - Snaf? Her Pearl quest was the best as far as I'm concerned, and was also where the idea of moving quest items was spawned.

With regards to Banshee not stealing quests, well, she made a good job of 'Play tic-tac-toe on the plains of Riga' AKA '4 in a row'. She did improve it, however, but then, so did Anna.

I agree with many of the quests listed as missed. I would like to add Nibs 'make a wish' and Profezzorns' golf quest, which was really fun for me.

I also loved Turbo's Mr Gumby quest, and the Ppannion/Randalar lag slayer quest.

Here is a list (a few years ago) of the closed quests that I noticed. I am sure there are many more nowadays (I order them by creator, if I can remember):

Mats: Explore Mordenkainen
Profezzorn: Inspire Profezzorn, Help Escher with his Drawings, Rob Death, Find Madame X's Crystal Ball, Make Scumble, Nannymud's Bureau of Investigations, Find Merlin's Hidden Treasure, Go 18 Holes on Nannymud's Golf, Help Nellie to Find her Cat
Milamber: Wake the Sleeping Dragon, Save a Valley from Flooding
Garion: The Belgariad Quest
Darick: Black Wizard
Tanya: Tanya's Prison, Make a Present for Dr. Strange (for Maggs), Find Tanya's pearl necklace
Aphrodyte: Find the Treasure in Axil's Funny House
Slater: Catch a Fish and Cook it
Kerish: Help the Tortoise
Earendil: Wand of Creation
Jojina: Build Your Own Castle
Akasha: Akasha's Bonsai Tree
Moonchild: Climb the Tower of Games, Help the Old Druid Slay the Lumberjack, Recover the Lost Crystal of Life, Destroy the Great Evil Threatening the Land
Ppannion: Explore the Hidden Desert
Nib: Build a New Guitar for the Old Musician, Make so the citizens of Bogor can return home, Make a Wish
Gogo: The Magical Topaz
Aita: Put the skeleton back together
Tulkas: Find the Ring, and seek its destruction, Riddle Hut
Padrone: Padland
Charmangle: Quest for the Soulstone
Mordor: The Magic Book

This is extremely incomplete and does not list the quests before my time, such as Badman's Bicycle quest or Raistlin's Tame Wild Ones (or does that mean those are listed now, too) and any quests since I stopped playing my mortals all the time (circa 1997 - or so...there WAS a spurt of playing from 1999-2001).

Woot! It's a crying shame when they are modified to the point that things you do in the quest make no sense...I can understand recoding to avoid cheating...BUT when it comes to totally screwing up the way the designed intended it...then the whole quest needs to be redesigned much better (descriptions etc) to reflect the modifications so that they make sense... There is nothing worse than a quest which no longer makes sense...and it's NOT always the creator's fault...but, ofc, they are blamed unfairly.

I especially love it when a quest is redone, often by adding a random aspect in the quest at some point and as you say, the descriptions, the hints etc are NOT changed.

The end-result of that is then the complete opposite from the intent. Instead of making the quest harder to do for people who've done it before, they actually make it near impossible for new players to solve, since only the ones who know they should be getting an item from searching will do it enough times to beat the random factor, while the new guy will simply not know he's supposed to find something ... eventually.

I couldn't agree more. It seems to be one of Banshees' ideas to make items appear when and only when the quester has got to some point in the quest.

An example is the wheel barrow in Chinos' quest. You can search the place where it is supposed to be for ever and ever, but until you have got to the required point in the quest, it will never appear.

So how does that mirror RL experience? As you said, how does the player know to search the area doing the same commands at every point in the quest? It must be very frustrating to say the least.

With regard to that quest, she would be better forcing the quester to find out what the Magpie actually wants (as originally coded by Chino), rather than letting it just be killed - which couldn't be done originally.

Wait a second!  There's supposed to be a wheelbarrow??!

No wonder I wasn't able to solve that one!  How frustrating was that, and I had probably gotten far enough along (after several hours) that if it had occurred to me to start searching every room from scratch I might have found it!  Gee, and people wonder why I don't like to quest - this was one of the early ones I did try.

I can take a little pride in saying that I did find out what the magpie wanted and didn't kill him!

Aye, Kobayashi is doable on your own if you like a challenge (read: if you're stubborn enough and have the time) *grins*.

The resets can be a pain in the arse though. But then again, with bad luck it's a pain in the rear end even for a larger party so don't let that stop you.

this may sound campy, but i miss the turtle quest from a LONG time ago.  I think it consisted of bringing a turtle to church and involving the entire mud in telling the turtle "i love you" or "i believe in you" etc...

be nice to have a new quest based off the turtle's memory where the ghost of the turtle comes to haunt you and torments you with endless spam until you chase down the (insert least favorite NPC) who gave the turtle the low-self-esteem complex in the first place.

see you in NANNY  :?

Stalker used the the karate belt and it was insanely good. If he was the one who had the highest skill or not, I don't know, but he was way up there.

Mishra made the belt, if I'm not mistaken ... I no longer recall exactly where you got it, but it was in his area, near the beginning I think.
