Title: Other memories... Post by: poogie on April 13, 2004, 11:27:33 AM In the "Remember when..." section that's dealing with things that happened on the game. What about memories of the place you first mudded from, who was there, and things like that?
In my dorm building there was a little computer room and I pretty much lived in there. It smelled horribly and we had those groovy green screen computers but I still have fond memories of hanging out there. I bought food from snack machines or I would stock up at the campus store ahead of time. Sometimes Terwin, Smurf or Solardria would join me in there and it was nice to have a fellow mudder around but most of the time I was alone. Ocassionally on my way back from class (when I attended) I would stop in the real computer lab and log on from there, just to get my fix. (Plus there were more computers available.) I don't have many wonderful memories of my time at the University of Wyoming (the REAL UW) but the ones from Nanny are bittersweet. /P Title: Remember where... Post by: Snafu on April 13, 2004, 11:36:30 AM Don't forget old Qzlatquire.
I first mudded from the computer labs at my school in Savannah, Georgia. I remember once when Panic printed out the entire Rocky Horror Picture Show script on the line printer and wasn't there when it finished. I believe he got kicked out of the lab. My school wasn't too mud friendly. There were other friends there who played other MUDs but I was happy with Nanny. After they stopped mudders in the lab, we had to mud from home. We secretly logged in over modem to MUD..but they stopped that too. Then we (Panic and I) started using Peachnet, the educational network for the state of Georgia, and we would use gopher to connect to Nanny. These were before the WWW caught on. I remember logging in at 1200/2400 baud and having brief turned on, otherwise, it was just plain too spammy. I also used to avoid big parties for the same reason, too much spam. It really got bad when people would start using client and speedwalking scripts. Recorder...thats what I'm talking about. The poor person's client/speedwalker. /Snafu :D Title: Other memories... Post by: ladychris on April 13, 2004, 12:51:28 PM Well, I started mudding from school computer lab, same place that for some reason now doesnt let me anymore (see daily rant) :(
I had no connection at home at that time. I remember collegues wondering how could i write so fast ;) LOL, english is not their strongest point so noone bothered to read what i was actually "writing". I used raw telnet at that time and had no clue what speedwalk was, so i did type fast, but not so much to explain the longdescs that kept scrolling on the monitor (yeah, had no clue i could switch to brief either, and even if i had had, i found longdescs so much more interesting). Anyway i was spending hrs and hrs there, it was summer holiday and ppl was wondering why the hell i went to school every day when i could stay home:P And i was continually making up excuses like "need to read my mail", "need to search about so and so" :P Later that summer my brother gave me a spare modem he had, and i could enjoy the pleasure of mudding from home, and the pleasure of paying phone bills :P I had to wait till 6.30 pm to get cheaper fare and seldom played more than 1hr/day,,, or at least that was what i kept telling myself... But then the 1 hr became 1.5, then 2 and there were weekends too when fare was so cheap one could not avoid connecting for hrs... I used to copy a lot of descs and help files on notepad and try to read and even solve quests offline :P Although i think it arrived latery than that summer, I actually solved Bixby's picnicers quest offline and logged on for a few mins quickly to finish it and get the qps :) So it continued for about a year. In the meantime i had met Blue and he introduced me to the delights of using a client... and my keyboard sighted in relief :) Still i kept logging on from school as much as i could :) Finally someone from telephone company phoned me (they must have noticed phone bills) suggesting me to swich to cable with a flat rate. I was in 7th heaven! Unfortunately cable did reach Trieste, but not the village nerbie i live in :( :( :( Took more than 1 yr before i finally got cable. In the meantime i had wizzed Loreley and coded most of my area (offline ofc). I dont even want to think how much i paid in phone bills because of parse errors ...;P Well, thats all. When in school i kept mudding from computer lab, until got cable there as well. But im afraid Minister of Education doesnt see mudding very well :( Recently something happened and cant connect anymore. Have to discover whats wrong and who did what. Funny, looks like you can go with browser to worst virus infected, porn sites, but you cant do a harmless telnet :P Title: Other memories... Post by: Qwer on April 13, 2004, 05:34:14 PM I started mudding in late '95 from the computer lab of the school (my first year as a student). Those were my first two months I actually seen what Internet and computer networks are about. :)) I started to play some very lame hungarian mud, then switched to Nanny, as two friends started to play Nanny just a day before. Some guy from another city told them about Nannymud on IRC, Niro (you prolly don't know him); I forgot what was his druids name. Anyway druids was my first guild, reached lvl 14 there I believe. It was so horrible at first, didn't knew anything, and was playing in verbose mode reading all that crap. It took me a few good months to find out that there is a 'brief' mode also. :) I don't know how was I able to play. Of course, with raw telnet. Hell, I remember when we went to kill Brom's giant demon in a party, typing 48 'e'-s was really noisy, on those old keyboards (was playing on 286s). Of course everyone died...
Title: Niro... Post by: Snafu on April 13, 2004, 06:18:09 PM Niro...I remember him...vaguely...Don't remember his other chars...
/Snafu Title: Other memories... Post by: Qwer on April 13, 2004, 06:26:37 PM Meanie was his I think, don't remember other chars right now. I am not very active as too busy trying to survive, unfortunately. Obviously I forgot a lot about Nanny.
But he had many chars, pked too with leper, dark, vamp, whatever. I hope I'll remember that druid chars name, I think it was his first. :) He was nice helping me around... Title: Niro.... Post by: Snafu on April 13, 2004, 06:29:52 PM I know who you're talking about but my mind is so rusty that I can't recall it...is Dionysos also his? Wasn't he known for his cruelty on the MUD? ;)
/Snafu :D Title: Other memories... Post by: Qwer on April 13, 2004, 06:39:30 PM Dunno about that char. But he was pretty mean ...
I might be wrong but I think it was him arguing with Sagrario (I am not exactly sure about the names but I think it was them) who has the best pkscore and after some arguing this guy left with hsi vamp, logged on a dark and in like a couple of minutes he showed up in the church, throwing Sagrario's head out of his pack. :)) He was a good pk, however, he obviously had some luck too, but it was impressive ... it kinda put an end to that discussion between them I guess. :)) I remember when most of the pks were against the Bucharest team, but they were killing us too (few players from another cities from Romania). There was a pretty addicted, but pro team there, it was fun playing with them. I cursed them many times, I got like half of my pkdeaths from them. But that was the real feeling of the game ... that went away with the soft-pk system, unfortunately. Title: Soft PK... Post by: Snafu on April 13, 2004, 06:56:45 PM Soft PK holds nothing to the time the MUD was all PK for a week. You should have seen the number of players idling in church in order to avoid the battle...cough...slaughter...outside.
I believe the mage Rocket had quite a few PK's with an alternate char of his named Cbr. *grin* The best PK times I remember were when Damned and Drunks were around... /Snafu :D Title: Other memories... Post by: garetjax on April 15, 2004, 01:08:18 PM When I started mudding we had 2 computers and a linux router between the 3 roommates. My roommate didn't have a system and always needed to go to the computer labs at school almost everyday. That changed when I started mudding, I would telnet from the linux router and play for hours on end while my roomie used my high-end system. I tell you, nothing is faster than telnet in linux in text mode 80 ;)
Title: Other memories... Post by: Kherec on April 15, 2004, 06:42:13 PM I remember Niro, I was ... well, if you could call it that, a 'friend' of his. But he was indeed kinda cruel (which, amongst other things, got him banished).
Anyways, yes, Dionysos is the same person, but he played a few other chars as well. Title: Other memories... Post by: Dain on April 16, 2004, 04:12:23 AM i start mudding in high school. with an other bunch of people. i don't remember how. there were a couple of labs and we were everywhere. of course the admins were also mudding so ... well we were all happy. sometimes people were playing over night. and in the morning ... well i guess that how zombies looked like. i ran a lot of chars and keep dying geting deleted. just before graduating from high school i got my first serious char. after being a khorne for some time, i left them (might have died as well) and joined knights. failed an attack, quitted and joined monks where i still am.
Title: Other memories... Post by: Jose on April 19, 2004, 10:45:22 AM I dont have a fixed login point, I play from internet cafes, I played from some strange places sometimes surrounded by angry conter-strike players so focus can be a problem... and to maitain a decent client is a living nightmare, the client problem wasnt at first when all i needed was some kind of telnet i didnt know of colours, brief and such but when i instaled a mud client I couldnt go back to telnet. So a configured version of my client can be found in my email address from where i download it when i want to play.
The thing is i cant play from school the security is too tight, I managed once to defeat the proxy server with somekind of http tunneling but the scam only lasted for a day til my admin somehow noticed the connection. Now at school i can only read logs and post messages on forums like this 8) . Another problem from playing from internet cafes is sometimes lag and the cost that is rather high so mostly i play at night... all the night  The obstacles dont succed to get me down the harder it gets the more i'm eager to play. Title: Re: Other memories... There was one other person that played from UW that I can't recall his name, but he mostly played on other muds, but sometimes came to Nanny Terwin/Terin/and all the rest Bucky or Terwin Always Leads Title: Other memories... The first mud I ever played, was from an online service called NovaLINK. It had your typical AOL type charges back then, when you were paying out the arse for every hour you were online. They had two different muds, one was an adult themed mud where you could gamble and dress up your character, and the other was a mud similar to NannyMUD. Thats where I met my first online girlfriend! She was about 27 and I think I was 15 at the time, lying about my real age. Whats funny is we actually spoke on the phone and I still played it off pretty well. After my Mom cancelled the subscription because I was always on it, I was introduced to the wonderful world of freenet. The first free access I had online was from S.E.F.L.I.N. where you would have 45 minutes to do whatever in their BBS system, and then get disconnected and have to dial in and wait through busy signals. Thats when I found out you can telnet outside of the SEFLIN computer, which was a whole new world to me. Started talking on IRC where I was a moderator (was so cool back then) for a server or some called us "dragons". Then, I happened to telnet to a computer in Sweden, and not understanding any of the language I managed to figure out how to get to games, then found NannyMUD and BatMUD. So, I started playing Nannymud, and was helped out by a few. I remember being "persuaded" to go pk which I had no clue what it was, and then some damn druid killed me outside the ship near the south coast. It was a confusing world back then, and after a couple of breaks in between I still can't see myself not playing NannyMUD. And with what Ladychris posted years ago, people wondered how she learned how to type so fast. It was always a process to explain to them you were playing a game. Title: Re: Other memories... Post by: draculea on February 05, 2007, 08:59:11 AM Well, I started mudding from the same high school and labs as Sparks!
How did I find out about mudding ? ... well ... I was in my last year as a high school student, during the spring vacation, at the National Maths Competition, when I heard from a younger guy who was also student in my high school and who was also very interested in Informatics that my classmate Badoiu ( International medals in Informatics) was rocking in this great game on the net called Mud. Hmm, I said to myself, if that guy finds it interesting then it must be. So, after school started and everybody was so stressed out by the outcoming exams ( graduation exams + university exams ) and some teachers were letting us a bit loose... I started skipping some classes and going to the lab to mud. We had it all, lag, bad links, great players ( those were playing from a separate lab, with better keyboards and better connections), all sorts of players, always someone to party with or ask. And ofc those great sport games when the mud went down in the middle of the day. The story can go on ... But I do feel the need to tell you two things: the mud was, obviously, Nanny! And Badoiu was also know on Nanny as ..... Michel. Ah and I did kill rabbits in the graveyard tunnels for 2 weeks, while getting lost at the humpbacked bridge on the way to adv guild. And I did get tricked into becoming pk so my first character is history. And man it was soooo hard to get to level 14 in those days. |
