In fact, RL has hit him so hard that he won't have time to work on the NannyMUD Times anymore, thus: The position as Editor for the NannyMUD times is open. This is the 'Summer 1999' issue, which reminds me of a song, Summer of 69, and the fact that years should be written using not two but four numbers so we can read this issue in year 2000 - and unless there comes along a new Editor, that is exactly what will happen. I am servings as Editor for this single issue only; I have no plans on creating any more issues. This issue contains the Gurk report from NannyMUD's 9:th birtday party; this was why I brought forth this issue. To fill things out a bit, I have added some things about marriages here in the game, etc. There's a few odds and ends, too, and a large survey performed by York. There's a horoscope, and a PK log, too. At the pen, /Brom ---------------------- The NannyMUD Times --------------------- page 3 --- Marriages February to June, 1999. Ah, the social life in NannyMUD, where boys meets girls, and girls meet boys, and some of them decide to walk side by side along the bumpy road of Virtual Life. The priest in the church is a bit set in his ways, and will only wed males and females; the list below could perhaps have been longer if he had accepted marriages between all genders. Well, here is the list of happy couples: February's Happy Couples Date of marriage -------------------------+------------------------- Toth Andrea Feb 4 1999 Gwynnyth Kodesh Feb 4 1999 Raya Rubicon Feb 6 1999 Tommyboy Pisces Feb 7 1999 Beril Xina Feb 8 1999 Levitan Insomnia Feb 8 1999 Tryat Valrhona Feb 10 1999 Teamo Anduin Feb 11 1999 Guest Dunstan Feb 11 1999 Icey Icecube Feb 14 1999 Ramandu Romana Feb 15 1999 Michel Alis Feb 15 1999 Adon Traxx Feb 16 1999 Guest Tommyboy Feb 16 1999 Mats Valentine Feb 16 1999 Papyron Pill Feb 17 1999 Decent Jennsan Feb 17 1999 Xenior Jetadore Feb 17 1999 Magier Olav Feb 18 1999 Sheena Tommyboy Feb 21 1999 Rock Anouk Feb 23 1999 Pisces Mengor Feb 24 1999 Mars' Happy Couples Date of marriage -------------------------+------------------------- Piere Arhimandrul Mar 2 1999 Shadey Rupey Mar 3 1999 Chi Oriond Mar 10 1999 Amante Gheorghe Mar 11 1999 Genivieve Esstan Mar 12 1999 Nobody Fonnie Mar 12 1999 Pooh Mikaa Mar 12 1999 Katyellen Wilhelm Mar 13 1999 Lilcutie Ashen Mar 14 1999 Serghei Lisa Mar 16 1999 Rapidash Takhar Mar 17 1999 Tifa Wolfy Mar 21 1999 Nightchild Cyberia Mar 22 1999 Atrox Cyberia Mar 23 1999 September Lisa Mar 23 1999 Exiver Helena Mar 24 1999 Spuhling Lazarus Mar 24 1999 Rowen Jetaime Mar 31 1999 April's Happy Couples Date of marriage -------------------------+------------------------- Nefandus Windmachine Apr 7 1999 Rockoletta Nefandus Apr 8 1999 Helena Anarion Apr 13 1999 Diabolica Arraquwain Apr 18 1999 Shan Mihaiu Apr 19 1999 Kvarnen Infra Apr 20 1999 Val Hrundi Apr 23 1999 Jaeger Elrique Apr 29 1999 May's Happy Couples Date of marriage -------------------------+------------------------- Frost Snowstar May 3 1999 Art Natalia May 8 1999 Matador Jeanie May 14 1999 Foxy Fluke May 14 1999 Rupey Nobody May 18 1999 Toth Gasoline May 31 1999 June's Happy Couples Date of marriage -------------------------+------------------------- Sphinx Matrix Jun 4 1999 Gabe Mami Jun 7 1999 Jens Dayala Jun 9 1999 Mana Arclyn Jun 10 1999 Electra Jalec Jun 13 1999 Sarcotome Orcryst Jun 17 1999 Prime Ancalagon Jun 17 1999 Frost Snowstar Jun 19 1999 Enigma Kelli Jun 20 1999 Cyberia Razvan Jun 23 1999 Susanne Scratchy Jun 25 1999 Popa Vanatoarea Jun 27 1999 Tiana Zorander Jun 29 1999 Title: Re: The NannyMUD Times issue 1999 Summer. Of course there was a Birthday Party celebrating that NannyMUD has survived more than nine years on the Internet. Of course Gurk attended the event, and of course he wrote a log. That log appears below. Have fun reading it, Gurk had fun writing it, and we all enjoyed the party. ..oo --== NannyMUD Celebration Party. 8/5 -99 ==-- oo.. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ First some notes by the party log deamon, me Gurk: This log shows more or less truthfully what happened, and it is all from my point of view. (Which got more and more blurry) So, if you do not like my opinions, press q now =) /Gurk -- log starts 18.35 Got a block and a pen from Dagoth. 18:36 Notices a big white dog in the room. It's Bilbo. He seem to be interested in sniffing. Bilbo tells me that his caretaker is named Teamo and is treating him good. 18:37 I look around and I see following persons: Leowon, Hans, Koff, Whizz, Dagoth, Oriole, Nib, Iceberg, Gwendolyn, Thargor, Nothel, Sunflower. (Admins checks and writes 'correct') It appears that we are on some sort of preeparty in perhaps Dagoth's appartment. (dorm) 18:38 Nib says: When do we get food!? 18:40 Meep enters the party, from the east. 18:41 Gwendolyn comments my handwriting and wonders if this years notes will be readable. (Very funny) 18:45 I can't see. 18:46 I open up another beer. 18:47 Still can't see... someone evil took a picture of my eyes. (Very funny) 18:52 Oriole and Dagoth are arguing about quests, there is an emberassing silence in the room. 18:53 Hans and Gurk continues talking about the little more interesting subject, beer. 18:57 Now people are talking PK, the mood seems to be back at 'great'. 19:00 Dagoth says: Perhaps we should go now? Someone says: Yes? (Noone moves) 19:05 The party decides to break up and move towards 'Herrgarden'. 19:10 Mats, Titleist and Toffee joins the party. 19:15 I notice that I'm at the Herrgarden right now. I'm at the mens room. I find to my pleasure that there is a padded pillow-like thing to lean my forehead against when I pee. In the background I hear Meep, he screams loudly: 'Small girls are charming!'. 19:20 People stand outside the big room, chatting. I talk a walk and take some quotes. "Brom says: Gurk, you are nice" (I think he is slightly drunk) "Brom says: People from orebro are immature!" (Slightly taken from its context) Leclerk look sober and wears a tie. 19:28 I sit down in the big room now, next to Leowon and Nothel. (fear) 19:30 Mats makes the mandatory welcome speach. He speak in english for some reason. (Tho, I do have problems with his accent sometimes it's not that extreme that he has to speak in english!!!) 19:31 I make a note of the song-book/paper, all songs are remade standard songs and they now contain "fisk" (fish) everywhere. Apparently the theme for this occasion is fisk. Leowon points out, quite polite, that it's important with RESPECT!!! (I don't get it) 19:35 Leowon sips several times from the beer before he tastes the food. 19:39 We sing the national-fisk-hymn. I hear Azatoth screaming 'Where is the booooooze!!!???'. Leowon and Nothel are quick to point out that this is before 20:00 19:44 I break Dagoth's pen. 19:46 Leowon has checked, we are 29 people in here. 19:47 People are standing up, talking in english... They say their MUD-names. Oriole is blabbering for a long time, noone listens. I hear the remark 'Sunflower is just a little plant'. (I don't get it) 19:45 Azatoth screams: 'Lets sing!' 19:58 Taren tells us about how the fisk-songs was created. 'Songs of fisk and devotion' Really exciting, because I don't get it. 20:09 I learn that there are several foreigners here. Thats why Mats and the rest of us had to speak in english. (Now I get that) 20:10 Toffee is from england, she has a faked tattoo on her arm. She also look good, in some brittish kind of way. 20:15 We sing again. I like to sing about fisk. Nib is very polite and translates all songs into english. Toffee listens politely. We are all impressed. I check with Nothel, Leowon and Mats. They are also impressed. Hans adds that he is not impressed. 20:18 I purpose a regular 'table laughter' (Everybody at our table laugh really loud, for no reason at all) Everybody at the other table wonders hard. :-) 20:22 Leowon whispers excitedly in my ear: 'Cinnamon icecream!!!!'. I don't get it. 20:25 Some dude walks around in the room with a big plate. He gives me food from that plate. It's meat and potatoes and some green things... and one red thing. 20:26 We sing about a fat fisk. 20:27 I taste the things on my plate, it seem ok. Nib is translating. 20:35 We come to the conclusion that Nib will probably translate all songs a few times to Toffee. Our advanced guess is that he will be done at 23:00 to 23:30. 20:40 We sing about naked fisks. Nib is translating, we are laughing. 20:41 Gurk makes a hard choice, just one more beer before the mens room. Toffee refuses to sing. 20:48 I enjoy the padding. I talk some whisky with Brom. He doesn't like 18 year old McAllan. 'It tastes like moonshine'. 20:50 Someone writes this in the logbook: (roughly translated) 'The cow made a discrete performance: Oh, Ah... cow, we are ...-bor' (I don't get it either) 20:56 We sing a song about a fisk. 20:58 Brom roars: 'Next year we skip the darn fisk-theme' This made the whole party discuss what we should have as a theme next year instead. Ducks? Penguines? Hedgehogs? *NATURAL TIME WARP* 20:57 I find this quote in my notes: Leowon pointed out: "Only a balta can another balta valta" when Brom complained about the fisks. (That one I do get, but you have to be swedish) 20:59 We toast in the king-markattas name! 21:00 Someone tries to get in contact with Kerish across the room screaming 'Kerish!' loudly several times, but Kerish only listens to 'damn northling!' (Lapp-Djavel!) 21:01 Gurk comes to the conclusion that he should ask our allmighty god something smart.... hmmmm! 21:02 Gurk asks Mats: 'Do you go here often?' Mats answers politely: 'About once a year'. 21:03 Gurk gets one year to come up with a better question. (Doesn't look good) 21:05 Tiamos food was ok, but disappeared. Dagoth is the main suspect. 21:15 'I have to make some notes here' We talk about giving out a demo of 'absolute fisk 1' or 'fisk trance' etc. The good part is that we got connections all over the world. (Being a international MUD and everything) Typicall example: Everybody knows the famous 'Hans, the great german motorcycle thrower' who thus *ought* to know Scooter, who atleast look german. 21:30 We are now about to sing about an eel. (It could be a fisk, I'm not sure) 21:30 We are applauding, it didn't go that great. 21:31 Azatoth are about to sing. 21:32 Azatoth and Brom are throwing bugs at eachothers. 21:33 Oriole makes a toast and screams: 'Vaga vagra wizza!'. (Dare refuse to wiz!) 21:34 Brom makes a kewl speach: 'Dare to wiz, thats what Nanny are made from!!!!' People are cheering. 21:40 I'm starting to lose the control here. 'Now it's time to hit the alcohol... DAMMIT!!!!' 21:45 Gurk feels an extreme urge to have more alcohol in his blood-circulation. 21:48 Makes a note that Nib is still translating. 21:50 WE GET FISK IN OUR ROOM!!! (Punsh) 21:58 Toffee says that the punsh tastes like 'anti-freeze', I have no idea but I trust her in this subject. 22:00 Got two glasses of punsh from some gentleman 'over there'. I drank them happily. 22:02 Iceberg stands up and makes a thank-you speach. The admins look pleased. (Go Iceberg!!!) 22:04 Gurk thinks it says 'FUCK' on Toffees shirt. Mats or someone explains that is says 'FCUK'. 22:10 Mats, Thargor, Hans swops down some disgusting tequila. I feel left behind. 22:20 We leave the dinner room. 22:35 I'm talking to Leclerk and Thargor. (It was Leclerk who bought me those punsh) We are 'talking some'. I'm not the slightest interested in writing notes right now. 22:40 Talking with the parents-to-be, Teamo and Dagoth. They are as usual, very nice and friendly. They tell me that they will have an it. It will be named Ellert. (I think about this for a while and my suggestion 'Kurt-Roland' or 'Emma-Olga' isn't appropirate to say loud) 21:41 I WANT LESS BLOOD IN MY ALCHOHOL-CIRCULATION! 22:44 The red talks about this important matter with ripped out spines. And if it was negative or not in combination with sex. 22:46 I find the note 'Small sussage fingers, where, how, when?!?' here... not my handwriting. 22:50 The discussion about spines are getting quite intense. Mats and Iceberg comes to the conclusion that it would create more positions atleast. 22:51 Enjoying the padded thingy at the toilet. 22:52 We are discussing where the babes are. 22:55 I write down a qoute: 'Azatoth: A seagull against the wind'. I don't get it. 23:05 Oriole is touching Whizz in a naughty way (Yes, so what?) Teamo wants another title on RTs. I don't understand why she talks to me about this. 23:14 The envelope to the camera is returned. (!?) 23:15 Brom has all his teeth, and he hasn't lost them at all. (second hand information) 23:16 Whizz says: 'I like my dreadlocks. When I was in 7th grade i poked my eyes with the comb, thus dreadlocks!!!!' 23:20 Talking deep things with Brom and Whizz. "Brom says: I used to be a street fighter!" 23:25 "It is completely f**ing empty here!!!!", "Remove your bra!!" (!?) 23:26 "It's bubbeling small stars and pink fluffy clouds about Teamo and Dagoth" 23:27 The DJ opens up with the lead theme to Braveheart. NannyMUD takes control over the dancefloor. "Nanny rewls, we are so kewl!" 23:36 GH-Gurk wins some money at the Black Jack table. 23:37 GH-Nothel tries his luck at the table. (Black jack table, not the round table) Old-GH-Meep rather puts his money on liquid things instead. 23:46 "Gurk leaves the logbook unattended" 23:50 "Gurk checks out Kerish's ass and likes what he sees" Gurk buys Lourdes a "sweet and fruity" drink and a coke for Leclerk. (Who believe it or not, still seem to be sober) Gurk says at the bar 'I'd like to have a Laphroaigh to me, a coke to that dude and a really sweet and slimy drink for her, make it red'. It became something named Terassa for Lourdes, she liked it. 24:00 "Mats hopes for another nine years of pleased costumers all over the world" 24:08 Gurk is betting quite hard on the black jack. 24:15 Jadea came to the place a while ago. Goodlooking as always. 24:30 Gurk is deplorable after dancing on the dance floor too hard together with Iceberg, Leowon and Jadea. (I see a blurry note that probably says: 'Does Meep dance? YES!!!') Gurk heads for the bar. 24:33 Gurk's speech is incomprehensible. /Hans 24:33 Whizz has sex with Oriole Eva took the glass meanwhile (Who is Eva?!) 24:35 Leowon "accidentaly" photographed two goodlooking non-mudders /Hans 24:42 Gurk stands corrected about cancer from snus /Hans 24:50 Leclerk and Lourdes leaves! 01:00 Jaskier tells us about Lodz. 01:07 Following gang sits and talks about Nanny and stuff: Iceberg, Nothel, Jaskier, Jadea, Thargor, Gurk. Suddenly Sunflower appears, followed by a very embarresing silence. 01:09 Everybody is silent. 01:10 It's Thargors fault, as usual! 01:16 Jadea thinks there should be something cute and cuddly in the notes so we write "FLUFF" /Kerish Kiss, Kiss, Kiss /Jadea 01:21 Jadea "Guys are pigs!" 01:22 We are all blind. We think Leowon took a picture. 01:23 Leowon is out of film. DAMMIT!!!!! /Leowon 01:25 Jadea wants some afterparty and free booze. We think it sounds like a good idea. 01:26 Gurk is molested by Nib 01:27 "Since Gurk is "busy" with Nib, Kerish takes over the logging. But since Mats and Jadea is peering at him, he gets nervous and writes HEEEEEEEEEEEELP!!!!!! Hirvin Perkele!!!!" /Kerish 01:30 Kerish and Gurk are discussing grammar. What does 'Voivitto' really mean? /Invisible person 01:32 "Koff hasn't fixed what he should, this smells demote!" /Mats 01:33 Nothel missed a 'hmm..hmm'. /Nothel 01:35 Gurk takes back the logbook! Ahndregg refuses to admit that he is nice "I'M EVIIIIIL!!!!" "Ahndregg has not has not had sex with girls of illegal age" (Costed him 20 sek.) 01:40 Gwendolyn sneaks around, looking evil, as usual. 01:41 Gwendolyn laughs in Gurk's face when asked "Say something nice!" 01:41 Leowon roars "Slide Gurkan, sliiiide!" and "After spanking comes moisture" //Efter tukt kommer fukt. Jakligt enkelt att oversatta! 01:45 Leowon thinks he told us a funny joke, noone is laughing. "Pump it? Pump that one!" (I don't get it) 01:55 Meep believes in water, but no, the night is still young! 01:58 Oriole *almost* answer when spoken to. 01:59 Oriole sticks her tounge out in a weak attempt to defend herself. 02:00 Oriole brags about surviving Brom. Nib tries to understand what Oriole says. 02:05 There is a huge fight about a chair. Nothel and Iceberg again. 02:07 Gurk is provoking Oriole. Oriole can't speak anymore. 02:08 Nib doesn't understand anything of what Oriole says. 02:09 Oriole really likes to mumble. 02:15 Someone took the logbook and wrote (in a very beautiful handwriting): How do you spell Taffe? It's so easy... but who is this eep|sheep|meep guy? 02:18 Toffee says "A latin lover never changes his favourite spots". 02:25 Oriole finally admits he|she|it is stooopid! 02:26 We get Jaskier from poland to say "Heja Polen!" (Go poland) Then we tease him about poles and that they have big poles... (Swedish joke about poles... big poles/logs... in their pants) Then Jaskier says: "No we do not have that in poland" Toffee adds "I know swedes have extremely big logs, I've seen it myself!" "Gurk has an extremely big log in his hands right now" /Someone. 02:36 Nib ruins another joke. 02:37 Gwendolyn and Jadea looks cuddly. 02:38 Everybody became quiet when they realize that Nib still has his mark on the jacket sleeve left. Nib should according to the majority rip away that mark. (Nib actually took out a small knife before we stopped him) 02:50 Hans "I need teepee for my bunghole" (I don't get that either...) Oriole "It's better to be bitter and old than be young and stupid!" 02:52 Jadea and Whizz are dancing close-close. Hans realizes much to his disapointment that *both* the bar and the blackjack table are closed. 02:53 Kerish would like to massage Toffees feet. "If there was a fountain, we would have been there already" 02:54 All male Mudders are lined up and trying look hot and sexy. They are all trying to get a dance with a busty blonde. 02:55 Hans adds that brunettes are also ok. 02:56 "We (read Hans) also appreciate redheads" 02:57 Girls with small chests and overweight are also ok. 02:59 Hans exclaims desperatly "Hello, wanna dance?!" to a longhaired guy. 03:14 We are at Dagoth's place again. Teamo and a white fluffy thing are sleeping in the bed, I think it is Bilbo. We watch some TV, people are getting beaten severly. 03:20 We discuss how beautiful it is with white hair. 03:30 We watch MTV, and someone (Leowon!?) comes up with a new lyrics to Offspring's "Pretty fly" ... "Give it to me guppie... blubb, blubb!!" 03:55 Slightly unreadable notes. It says, perhaps: I like you too... Or, I like your toe. 04:15 Kerish has to go to bed, because of the hockey. 04:16 Kerish says mean things to Gurk, and then leaves. 04:20 We talk about a common friend, named The Dieselman. 04:45 Towards Leowon's sofa. 04:48 Gurk finds an almost naked Hans in a sofa. Gurk choses the other sofa. 04:50 Gurk and Leowon carries a bed. End of log. --- Hmm, that was all in the logbook. A funny thing to add would be that Oriole was pretty sick that night. He also stayed at Nothel's place (His GuildHead and also an admin) and made... several.. hmm.. offers to the great porclain god. We also stoped the car at one occasion to 'check things'. Oriole went outside for some 'fresh air'. We had stopped the car at the very place a farmer had stored a 4 years stock of manurer. We thought that was 'funny' to scream 'Ahaaa... there is shit on the road, lots!!'. But I understand him, no wonder he was sick... he had all his belly full of puke. The NannyMUD Times was originally created by the Arch wizard Anvil, who then became the first Editor. During this time, it was always fresh out of the press, as each paper was printed upon demand and no stocks were held. The paper also accepted input from players and wizards, and seems to have had a rather extended dating section due to this fact. Apart from the Personal pages and the Editorial, it had sections like Ads, Announcements and Comics The next Editor was Padrone, also an Arch wizard. The paper kept its basic shape, with a few minor cosmetic changes to the layout only. Padrone wrote some of the stuff; in the end he wrote all of it. Due to the lack of interest, the paper stopped appearing shortly afterwards. You could still buy the latest number though, until about a year later. Then Chrystoval started work as an Editor and made a new version of the paper. It had a rather large Personal Pages section and a lot of good (and bad) jokes and stories. The flurry lasted for some months before it was once again down to the Editor writing all of the articles to appear. Naturally, it died rather fast after that. Next in line about a year and a half after the last Editor gave up was Leclerk. He has, in the style of Chrystoval, started the design from scratch, but he has obviously also decided to have another kind of content, with interviews of known and un-known MUDders, horoscopes etc. After Leclerk lost the drive, Lonewolf carried on the good work. Yet again, the paper was re-written from scratch, and given a new content, including quizzes with rewards, travel reports, polls, horoscopes, and much, much more. After Lonewolf started to attend the university, the pause between the issues became a bit longer, and finally they stopped arriving at all. It has been said that the first NannyMUD Times was a real newspaper under Anvil and Padrone, more of a fanzine while cared for by Chrystoval, a tabloid when Leclerk was the Editor, and more of a family magazine under Lonewolf. This is right and proper, since in order to keep new editions appear, it is necessary that the Editor has a rather large amount of influence both on design and content. If the paper is to survive in the long run, it also needs input from it's readers. This is where all versions have failed. It seems everybody loves the paper to continue, but nobody really loves it much enough to contribute much. ---------------------- The NannyMUD Times --------------------- page 8 --- So, the position as Editor is open. You might ask yourself, what does it take to be the Editor of the NannyMUD Times? The simple part is that you have to be able to handle the tecnical stuff; this essentially deamnds that you are a Wizard. The more complex part is to compile the material that will go into the paper. If you have a steady staff of contributors, Wizards and Mortals, that isn't that much of a problem either. But the big problem seems to be to establish, and keep such a staff. This is probably the hardest part. If you manage to encourage others to write things, being the Editor isn't that much work. If you have to write it all by yourself, it is quite a lot of work. No editor so far has managed to do so for long. The rewards are small and intangible, perhaps you will gain some fame in the game from being the Editor. Surely you will note how eager everyone is waiting for the next issue. ---------------------- The NannyMUD Times --------------------- page 9 --- This is the Horoscope section, or Life as the Stars Tell. It is well-known that the influence of celestial bodies lightyears away have a profound influence on our lives here at earth. In the same way, the shows at Broadway, New York, determines the stock market prices in Europe. So, when the stars are right, we will most definitely know, because Great Cthulhu will once again stalk the earth, and mankind will soon be extinct. While you wait, read your Horrorscope. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19): The lesser Gods smile benevolently and mindlessly at you while they dance around their sultan. You might want to join that dance. Remember to use your Elder Sign for safe intercourse. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20): There's a prospect of unexpected travelling in your future, to exotic destinations and by extraordinary means. You might for example have a surprise ride with a Byakhee to see Azatoth, where Great Fun awaits you, or It. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20): You will meet a soul-mate, Zhar the twin Obscenity, unless you are really careful. Hiding might be an option; stay away from dead, buried cities and you should do well. CANCER (JUNE 21- JULY 22): Your sphere will be influenced by Atlach-Nacha, who will spin it's net to trap and entangle you. It is possible that large quantities of lard, liberally applied over your body, will help you slip away from the net and avoid entanglements. LEO (JULY 23-AUGUST 22): Leo is an Arch Wizard. Visit him under the church; that will most probably be the only safe place in the near future. But can you trust this powerful and old man? Perhaps he is just another servant of the Great Old Ones? VIRGO (AUGUST 23-SEPTEMBER 22): Your life will be interesting, albeit short. You will be much demand for social occasions wherever cultists gather to perform their ceremonies. You are adviced to spend your saturday nights hiding in the cellar. LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23-OCTOBER 22): Dark times await you; the earth itself and it's inhabitants are baleful influences for you during this period. Perhaps the fresh breeze of the sea and the Shoggoth is what you need, or perhaps an astral one-way trip with the help of Yog-Sothoth? Remember to bring the sacrifice. SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23-NOVEMBER 21): Your future holds a combination of a dark stranger and tentacled monsters - and they all have the same name: Nyarlathotep. There are several ways to run, but just one to hide: the asylum is open. SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22-DECEMBER 21): You might turn to unorthodox methods to improve your chances in the near future: one can fight water with fire. Summoning Cthugha might well have good effects on Great Cthulhu, but then you might need to summon Hastur, who is not to be named... Oops. CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22-JANUARY 19): The goat is yet another traditional sacrifice to the dark powers. You will meet a dark stranger with too many eyes and tentacles, and hooves; chances are extra good if you walk the romantic woods alone under the dark of the moon. AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20-FEBRUARY 18): Father Dagon and mother Hydra will have a profound impact on your short life if you do not watch out. Stay away from waters; hide in the woods. You might make new and unsuspected friends there. PISCES (FEBRUARY 19-MARCH 20): There's quite a lot of fish in the sea; perhaps you can hide from watching, hungry eyes, by being part of the crowd. You are adviced to adopt the same style of fashion as the neighbourhood. Blood-red, and gore-green will probably be very popular colours. Title: Re: The NannyMUD Times issue 1999 Summer. Naturally, there was a player question for this issue. Here is the question: This is the question for the summer issue of NannyMUD Times: On a scale from 1 to 10, 1 being 'Not at all', how much do you enjoy the NannyMUD Times? There were 50 players on at the occasion, and 17 answered. Here are the compiled answers: 10 2 9 1 8 6 7 0 6 0 5 2 4 1 3 1 2 3 1 1 Average is 5.9. And here are the compiled comments: I enjoy it, but barely ever get to read it? I always played the puzzles. Hmm, for me to answer that question, I'd have to remember the last time I saw an issue of the NannyMUD Times. Don't know, haven't read the paper lately. There should be more about new quests or guilds and stuff. I wish more people would write for it. Leclerk's gossip rag was fun on occasion, but I think Lonewolf's had a bit more substance. The interviews with newbie admin and news about area closings/openings were good, but the pk logs - bleah. ---------------------- The NannyMUD Times --------------------- page 11 -- The PK log seems to have contained guild secrets and has thus been removed. PK-logs sucks, anyway. :) > > read page 12 You read page 12 in your newspaper. ---------------------- The NannyMUD Times --------------------- page 12 -- The player York has performed a survey, in several parts. Some 23 people have answered the questions, of those the smallest part were mortals. The by fra largets part was wizards and their seconds. This firts part tells what the popular opinion is as to which monster is the most deadly, and why. The question was: --- * What is, in your opinion, the most deadly monster - and perhaps why? Lan: Well, since I never kill those big bad monsters I hardly know any. But Nurgle is kinda tough, killed him tho...Some monster in Leo's area that you get beam of sunlight (or something like that) from. Hard as well. Jetaime: Wouldn't know really, don't get a kick out of living on the edge, alas I don't go look for bs monsters. Kherec: I don't hunt down really hard monsters, unless there's a fat reward for doing so, which in Nanny, there is not. Atleast not a reward worth the trouble, so therefor I really can't name a nemesis so terribly deadly. Barbarella: I don't know if it's the most deadly monster around, but Andra and Erendi have a rocking dragon, called Vibygor I believe... Ferrodor: Most deadly monster is lag. From 10 kills 8 are due to lag. The other 2 are 1 for surprise and 1 for vanity. The monsters involved are irrelevant. Anonymous: The only time I was ever killed was during Banshee's year. And it wasn't the turkey. I'll leave it at that. Mihaiu: Well the most feared monster is the one from whom you don't know dirs out and if it (the monster) has a habit to follow you around in some rooms you would probably die, and get lots of comforts Beldin: There are a lot of deadly monsters; the majority of them are only deadly to the unprepared or ignorant. My personal experience in the game is that some of Raque Island's monsters such as Halnar and Yogul present the greatest raw threat to a player. But bear in mind that it's been almost a year since I've played actively. Jaskier: Well, Qqqq's chemist and I'd also mention vampires in Banshee's tower. I think you know why if you tried to kill any of them. Mistral: Terminator at Panic area. Leowon: Llyrra. Because she'll kill you, and you'll still love her. Nyoni: The answer to that question all depends on your level. Then rats can be pretty nasty. Think: Almost any big monster is deadly if youre stupid. Enoch: Hunt the dragons. It took almost 20 minutes, I was so happy when I solved it. Charisma: I think Hewey, Dewey, and Lewey are the most deadly monster(s) since they are deceptively innocent looking. Probably a bad answer--but they are all I remember Anyway, if they were more easy to kill, more people would have socks, right? Taren: Lazyness and stupidity, the two things that kills most is players not reading enough, looking around enough. Ofc this goes for me too, I remember the time when I was killed twice by the same monster, both times because I forgot it was to the east of me... Gurk: That must be that nasty Brom monster... Cathbad: Until recently I didn't play much around here. I had other things to keep my occupied. So, I don't really know what's that dangerous around here any more. If I was pushed for an answer I'd say "lag". That one's a killer. Smygelfh: Hmm, I haven't played with the rumoured Nurgle... I believe Findrod (Charmangle) is pretty deadly. There really isn't anything comparable to Pet... Ilyrion: Dark Sleeper Lys: Rift Demon comes to mind. Actually some of the most deadly places have several monsters and no exits. Vibgyor is rather deadly, but you have to attack him first. He sometimes makes it impossible to wimpy. Dreamworld has had some buggy instant killers, making that an area I avoid. Meep: I don't know, I try to stay out of their way. Gleep was scary though. Mishra: Hard question, next please :). Anonymous (2nd): Rift Demon - wimping your heart out;) Title: Re: The NannyMUD Times issue 1999 Summer. The survey continues with a new question, one which is based the players sense of humour. What is fun to someone might be dreadful to the other. I am sure that Mym wasn't that happy about the Mym incident, while others fopund it hilarious. --- What is, in your opinion, the most funny thing you have seen in this mud? Lan: Well, everything seamed more fun when you where a newby. Because then you could flap around all you wanted. Remember when ramses joint was still "on the market" and there was a "joint party" at green. Made me crack up. Kherec: This is perhaps not very nice, but it's probably when Kvarnen asked and shouted questions about starting a mud, and especially the one where he asked if there was any mudserver ran in windows. Barbarella: I think the day Mym crippled the MUD tops my list of funny things. There's a nice account of the episode at http://www.lysator.liu.se/nanny/misc/history/events.html Ferrodor: Too many funny things happened to say which of them was most funny. But definitly many of those funny things happened in meeps area. Anonymous: Dante/Yossarian whining. Mihaiu: Well everything is fun, the game is a RPG, which is a style that i like most and the think that you interact with people from all over the world and espaecialy 1 or 2 of them :) Beldin: I've seen a lot of funny things, but as a broad stroke, Profezzorn's Turing II fake newbie probably presented the best long-term entertainment and amusement value. Jaskier: Chats on guild line may be very amusing especially when knights are waiing for an attack and get bored. IMO the cannon in Earendil's castle is most funny. I don't know if it's still there, though. Mistral: Curses on Harry :) Leowon: The bearfighting arena, Kent, and everything Meep ever touched. Nyoni: Snafu Think: Pull Mingolads finger :) Enoch: The joint partys on green..long time ago. Credits to Akasha's junk shop. Charisma: I can't remember anything notably funny, but I think the most funny things have to do with the stupidity of some people. Taren: The introduction of new style guilds. That is guilds that are more complex, more things to do in them. Gurk: I think it was funny when I coded a Pamela Anderson and placed her on green... The admins didn't share my joy. Cathbad: Y'know...absolutely nothing springs to mind. Lourdes: 1. The day that the bailiff was doling out money to everyone who passed by, rather than taking it, OR 2. When a certain male wizard found out the female wizard he'd been mudsexing was, in fact, also male. Smygelfh: I dunno. Lots of funny things all the time, mostly with other players. I don't want to see too much jokes around in the world. Lys: I've seen a lot of funny things, mostly people. I enjoyed the time I was able to put about 20 house specials from the pub in Westport into my sack with my simyarin. (bug repped it ofc, in case it wasn't just a new feature ) Meep: Mthead's sentry, Mym on the wizline after he accidentally destructed half the mud (more or less). Anonymous (2nd): Banshee helping people questing;) ---------------------- The NannyMUD Times --------------------- page 14 -- Questing is a central part of playing NannyMUD, and thus it is natural to include a question of the best quest. --- * What quest do you like most - and perhaps why? Lan: I like preform some necromancy...since I did it while I was exploring the area and the room desc there was good and really scary ,) And then there is the fact that I solved it first in Nanny after it opened officially. Jetaime: Tulkas' Find the Ring and seek it's destruction. No kills needed, mazes you get a self esteem boost of coz you can solve them in no time. And the fact that i love the story behind the quest. Nice amount of qp too =) Kherec: The quest I enjoyed most upon completing, was Mortis' help death, and that quest is still funny when I do it. Barbarella: Moonchild's "Tower of Games" was always a favorite of mine. I enjoyed the puzzles and games, it was challenging without being tedious. Celeborn's "Leaning Tower" quest was a pleasure because of the detail and creativity displayed in his area. Quests that require interaction and cooperation were also enjoyable, Kerish's "Tortoise" quest (I _believe_ in your tortoise!) and at one point Brom and Banshee's "Light Up the Night" was fun. Ferrodor: Tie between Merlin's Hidden Treasure, Tower of Games and Help Lorn. (Well, the last one only the first time i did it, since it helped to learn about the mud like no other quest.) Anonymous: Banshee's year - It's fun, challenging, and manageable Beldin: I'd say the quest I enjoyed doing the most was Profezzorn's NannyMUD Bureau of Investigations quest, now defunct. My secondchar Rael was the first player to solve it that was not a tester or Profezzorn himself. The quest borrowed elements from Rob Death, and encouraged the player to explore Profezzorn's area carefully. I'd like to also give an honorable mention to Brom's Slay Ten Dragons quest, for being the best quest out of the dozen or so quests that help to give NannyMUD its unique identity. Jaskier: Join carpet rides, even if I didn't actually solved it. It required a lot of skills and the idea of flying the carpet is cool. The way of steering the carpet in also very unusual. I love this quest and I hope I'll finally solve it :) Mistral: Year of Banshee. Leowon: Anna's painting quest: It makes people explore. Nyoni: Long ago there was a quest that involved a pyramid and a mummy and stuff. That was my favorite. I liked how descriptive it was and how each element fit together with the whole. Think: Vincents carpet... its great, totally intuitive, you have to really get into the quest and learn the way it works before you can solve it... and its HARD to sheet, too many ppl ruin quests by sheeting.... you feel good after having solved it. Charisma: I like two quests--Cherryhill and Anna's paintings. They both are worth a lot of points, and require minimal hack and slaughter. I think they both take a little bit of finesse as well. Most importantly, they took me a long time to figure out or complete, but it was gratifying once over. Taren: I liked Year of Banshee, and still do. It is a fairly easy quest, it is straight forward and shows many aspects of the mud. Gurk: I really loved (and still do) Celeborns leaning tower. Cathbad: I play tested Iceblink and Kiki's Canterbury Quest and thought it was great. I just liked the theme really. I'm the kind of masochist who enjoys reading Middle English texts. Lourdes: My favorite quests are those in which each step is clearly apparent, and when solved, leads to the next step -- Axil's Funnyhouse, Donate to the Armoury in Solo, Year of Banshee, Go 18 Holes on NannyMUD's Golf Course, etc. -- as opposed to solving different parts of a quest in no particular order. I also enjoy Make a Hamburger from Scratch. Smygelfh: Hmm, I'd say Caymar. Very thematic and logical quest, and no idiotic mazes or such, and neither too easy nor too hard. Ilyrion: Dragonegg Lys: Of the still existing quests, I think I enjoy The Mystery of Caymar Island. I always appreciate when it's clear where to go to start a quest. It has nice puzzles sees the mouse struggling against the net. and I like mysteries anyway. I prefer this kind to the hack your way mindlessly through kind of quest. Of past quests, my favourite was always Merlin's Treasure with its logic puzzle doors. And the monolith when your logic strayed was fun. Meep: Tower of Games - hey, Boggle anyone? Bonsai Tree & Kent quests - for the atmosphere. Tanya's prison was fun too the first time. Leaning Tower - first quest I made. Climb the Tower of Death - the inspiration for the Suicide Tower. Anonymous (2nd): Asylum Title: Re: The NannyMUD Times issue 1999 Summer. Post by: Polar on September 07, 2006, 09:00:57 AM ---------------------- The NannyMUD Times --------------------- page 15 --
More questions on quests, this time the other side of the coin: The Dark Side. --- * What quest do you hate most - and perhaps why? Jetaime: Hmm... Vincent's quest can be a pain in the behind... they interfer with one another and I hate when quests messes with me... Kherec: I don't hate any quests really, but I do dislike HUGE mazes. Mainly because that's one of the few things I am unpatient about. Barbarella: I won't pick on any one quest, but I'll generalize and say that quests which rely upon illogical random elements and that do not give sufficient clues to the player really turned me off to playing the game. It's a shame that the only apparent solution to the problem of quest sheets was to ruin so many quests. Ferrodor: Bells of St Mary. Shameless plug. Anonymous: Recover the Lost Crystal - because I didn't realize it had been pulled until after I'd completed it Beldin: Panic has some obnoxious quests, and my first instinct is to name one of those. But really, I dislike Banshee's Praise the Lord quest. The quest itself is well-written and encourages players to get into the proper mood, and there's nothing wrong with the quest from those standpoints. What I dislike about the quest is that it's very hard to get started at because the entrance to the quest is not easily accessible, and when it is available, players tend to fight over it. Quests like that bring out the worst in NannyMUD players, and I dislike them for that reason. Jaskier: There are two of them. Vampire tower - died here twice and New quest for evil wannabes. In the latter, the monsters are autoattacking and hit really hard. I died there twice, too :( Mistral: Well... dont have any worst quest... Vampire tower? (died twice) Leowon: Certain Panic quests with certain modifiations. Nyoni: Anyone remember Badman's bicycle? -- Didn't fit the theme, didn't make any sense, cheats readily available. Think: Not sure... the last kill on skullcap is insane! especially if you're doing it by yourself as an adventurer... Charisma: I think it was the one with the coins that gave me a lot of hassle. Not sure. Taren: If I recall the name correctly, Black tower. It was closed a few years back... Cathbad: Tulkas' ring quest has annoying mazes and some seriously obscure syntax. If you know what to do it's really easy. However, if anyone has worked out exactly what to do with the hook without any help then they don't speak any kind of English I know. Lourdes: Those whose quest info offer useless or vague information about the quest itself. Smygelfh: Worst Quest... Most of Vincent's... Good quests, but it's one in a million that the items are to be found, especially as many of them are used in many quests. And the anti-speedwalk system in Hermit/Beer is really frustrating. Then there are plenty of quests with totally unlogical solutions as well, but none that points out right now. And anti-guild quests like Praise the Lord, Lorn's food, Vamp tower, just suck. Ilyrion: Smoke a pipe Lys: DemonKnight. Its a mindless hack and slash quest. Probably the most mindless one, a test of stamina and boring tedium. Meep: Shake Hand With Master Lich was terrible before the recode and dragging around 10 people on Kobayashi can make you hate anything. Anonymous (2nd): DK - boring ---------------------- The NannyMUD Times --------------------- page 16 -- And now we arrive at the popularity contest: whom do we all love? --- * Whom (player(s) - mortal) do you like most - and perhaps why? Lan: Very hard, have a lot of good friends. Mabye Wrathscarab, we have the same goofy style. And I've meet him in RL aswell. Jetaime: Quite a bunch, can't name 1 in particular. Kherec: Sundaar, because he and I always have fun when we play. (and that my friends, is what this game is all about) Barbarella: I enjoy talking with Oriole largely because she excells at the game and has since before I began playing here. I hold a great deal of respect for those players who take the time to examine carefully and give feedback to the creators. I also have positive regard for players like Oak who bring personality and character to the game, which would be lifeless and pointless without it. Ferrodor: That's a question from a past issue. (*yawn!*) Mihaiu: There are several people that like (Cost, Zyraxes, York, Shan, Sparks, and the list can continue more) Beldin: I don't talk with mortals very often, but I have a few mortal friends who stick on this list. Excluding extremely idle or incognito people who just show up on NannyMUD to visit me and other old friends, probably my favorite mortal right now is Oak, because he plays along with my jokes. Jaskier: Ok, I'll take my chance and say that I liked Mistress the most. She helped me a lot during my newbie times and she has kept helping ppl ever since. I got so upset by her banishment and I sincerely hope the admins will change their decision. (Editor's note: Mistress asked for her character to be banished, and the admin granted her request.) Mistral: Well - to much of them :) Leowon: Snowstar, because she gave me a daisy. :-) Nyoni: Oak. He's da bomb. Think: Joxer, hes got a crazy attitude but i know hes just a teddy bear inside. Enoch: Lurk, he make the best kebab's. Charisma: Azroth, Anduril, Joxer, Iver(Jrs)... Hmm, these are the only mortals I know... And I don't talk to them much. Kinda out of the loop, no? I think I like them for the same reason I like talking to them. Taren: No comment. Gurk: Oh, I like lots of players... noone in particular. Cathbad: I couldn't single anyone out really. Lourdes: I don't really play or interact with mortals very often anymore, so by default I should simply say my own seconds. Smygelfh: here are plenty, but if have to pick one, I'd put Tirian on the scene. A very nice and helpful person. Lys: I'll pass. People I care about know it, as do people I dislike. I see no point in flaming people I don't like, and don't care to hear who and why others dislike certain people. I don't think this is a wise question. Meep: All Dwinbar's seconds, except one. All mortals that use bug, typo and praise. All mortals whose name starts with Duck. Anonymous (2nd): Grim. Title: Re: The NannyMUD Times issue 1999 Summer. More on the popularity, but this time the question deals with the wizards. --- * Whom (player(s) - wizard) do you like most - and perhaps why? Lan: Same thing, have some good friends that are wizards...hard to pick "the best". Gurk, nothel, dagoth, aphextwin, meep, exxelsior, etc etc, most people that has to do with the "RT-profession" as you might see. Marbleleaf, Mindeye. Jetaime: Dagoth, I'm a tiny bit partial here tho... =) Have a lot of other favourites too but can't provide you with a long list. Kherec: Leowon, for his guidance. Barbarella: There's too many to name here. I think first one would have to mention the admin of the MUD, without them there wouldn't be a NannyMUD and quite obviously no NannyMUD Times, etc. Beyond that I enjoy the company of many old Damned who've become wizards. I miss some of the wizards who've moved on, Andromeda for example seems to have left Nanny altogether. She was one of those people who brought character to the place, and I'll miss that. Anonymous: Rupey, because she's so snuggley. Mihaiu: Gurk, Snafu, Sinue, Vincent (for hunter guild) I don't think i a hate any wizard, they all try to make their job (wizardlike). Beldin: I like me the best out of all the wizards, because I'm the best of all the wizards. Heh. Actually I have to divide this question into two categories, active wizards and inactive wizards. My favorite inactive wizard is Profezzorn, for coding so many of the things which got me addicted to NannyMUD, and for teaching me the difference between good hacks and bad ones. My favorite active wizard? That's a tricky one, because I'm not 100% active myself. I have to rate Leowon fairly high on that list, not just for having a great area, but for pioneering the way we do quality control on NannyMUD. He's also just an all-around nice guy. I'm better friends with some other wizards, but Leowon is my favorite active wizard, if that decision is based exclusively on the player's contributions as a wizard. Jaskier: Mistral, he's my RL friend :-) I don't know wizes too well. And I'd like to point out Kerish, who's the only wizard who answered my reply to quest mail. Mistral: Banshee :) and Anna. Leowon: My dear cousin Keyser. Snabbiff. Nyoni: Nyoni! -- I'm just cool that way. Think: Snafu ofc! and if you dont know why youre silly as a loon. Enoch: Brom and Banshee, they got the best area's! Charisma: Avis, Belegur, Beleriand, Exxelsior, Gwendolyn, Leowon, Taren --in alphabetical order--don't want to offend anyone :) I like them because I can bitch to them about being sleepy all the time, having to go to work, and eating breakfast. And they are fun to talk to, wonderfully nice, and most importantly, they aren't filled with bullshit. :) Taren: No comment. Gurk: I like Snoopd! He is *the* rolemodel around here. Cathbad: Oh that's easy. Me. I'm wonderful. No, really... Lourdes: Yours truly! Smygelfh: Noone special really, I'd vote for Ethel, but she's my friend from the mortal time, so I guess it won't count. Lys: Dagoths as it keeps growing, improving, has lots to look at, variety and he responds to tyopes, ideas etc. Leowons, pretty much the same reasons, plus interesting puzzles. Barbarella's, best descriptions on this mud. Evocative, I'd swear I can smell, feel and hear it. Every other area looks flat after being in that area. Meep: Mats. Why? Does God need a reason? Anonymous (2nd): Czygorwan, Titleist, Vincent, Gurk ---------------------- The NannyMUD Times --------------------- page 18 -- There's also the Dark side to consider. In the answer to the question below, dark and olk dislikes are revealed to the outer world. Well, not really. But it could have been that way. --- * What (player(s) - mortal) do you dislike most - and perhaps why? Lan: The kenemies? ,) I don't like people who deliberatly lie, like peple who try to convince you that they for instance are girls when they really are guys. Those people have made me so suspisous towards girl chars, that I aassume everyone is a guy. Jetaime: Some ppl can get me very irritated either by asking things or behaving in a certain way, can't name anyone I "dislike" tho. Barbarella: I won't name anyone by name. I try not to dwell on that kind of thing anymore, it just isn't worth the energy. In general I only really dislike players who go out of there way to ruin the game for others. Ferrodor: I try to avoid contact with those who are on the brink of falling into that category, just to keep it clean. Anonymous: A few of the Romanians are wankers ;-) Mihaiu: I dislike Blizzard (no heart-feelings man) but sometimes he can be a pain in the ass. Beldin: I dislike mortals that behave in a way which generate work for myself and the other admin. Whether this is cheaters, harassers, spammers, or whiners, they all get on my nerves. I won't name a specific name in this case, but there are a couple of mortals hanging around on Nanny that have only survived demotion or other punishment because they log in at different times from me. Jaskier: I can't say there's anyone I dislike. Mistral: I am not person to dislike anyone for much longer then quarrel, so... :) Leowon: Pyro! Because he was Pyro. Nyoni: There are so many to choose from... Think: York! j/k nah i dont really dislike anyone and even if i did i wouldnt say it in the paper Enoch: All the knights, they won't party with me! :( Charisma: I hate all of the self-righteous players that take this _game_ too seriously. The same people who cry and whine on the boards. I can't name names though. Taren: No comment. Gurk: I dislike that nasty bastard Harry! I HATE HIM!!! Nasigoreng: If what's being said about Hate is true, i'd pick him, but i don't know this from personal experience. Killing newbies is just pathetic. Cathbad: Anyone who steals my kills when I'm playing as a mortal. I suck badly enough without their help. Lourdes: The idiots who constantly shout about everyone they believe to be "flaps" while failing to realize they're doing a fine job of labeling themselves thus at the same time. Smygelfh: Heh, there are lots of them. The one I hate worst right now is probably Kylie. Immature bragging flap who has no idea what he's talking about. Meep: One of Dwinbar's seconds who accidentally killed me when experimenting with rot. Mishra: The ones that chats and does nothing else. IRC works well if you just want to chat around. More from the dark depths here, but this time dealing with the Immortals of the game. There's a suitable quote from the books of R.R. Tolkien here, but my memory fails me. --- * What (player(s) - wizard) do you dislike most - and perhaps why? Lan: People who bitch all the time ,) Personal grudges you might have had with some of them or just their attitude towards you even tho they don't know you. Like me being an RT, many, both wizards and mortals might judge you because you are an RT... Kherec: I dislike anyone who see muds as a place where they can throw away ethics and such, and moch and harass other people. Don't get me wrong here, I'm not talking about dragging people to pet or anything, I'm talking verbal abuse. This goes for mortals, wizards alike. Barbarella: Again, no need to name anyone. Wizards who code poor areas just to advance or for the benefit of their friends/seconds do a disservice to the entire MUD, and of course wizards who waste the time and patience of the admin by using their wizards to cheat. Mihaiu: I don't think i a hate any wizard, they all try to make their job (wizardlike). Beldin: Again, I'd rather not name specific names, but I dislike wizards that take their powers for granted and use them either to cheat or bend the rules as far as possible. I also dislike wizards who code areas with no degree of quality control or creativity. This is not just bug and typo-fixing, but also concentrating on having the sort of area which challenges people to think as well as to fight. If you're going to code hack-and-slash kills, fine, but don't do it by giving them a huge wc, big-damage single-target spells, a ton of hit points, and no other special traits. Code the monsters in a way that challenge players to fight smart. Leowon: (I'm too polite.) Think: Blarg see last question. Enoch: Belegur, he always beat me in boggle :( Charisma: Again--cant name names. But, I am sure that there are more people who hate me than people I hate. Not to say that I'm not a real bitch though. Taren: No comment. Gurk: That would be the evil wizards Bb and Bbc, fuck them! Nasigoreng: All i've had interactions with are nice, so i don't dislike any of them. Cathbad: Ha! And get myself banned? No chance! Smygelfh: I haven't had a problem with anyone here either. I'd put Sindel up for a spank since he created pk-stuff to help his second... Meep: Mats. Can he take care of my phonebills? Mishra: The answer of that is written all over the sky. ---------------------- The NannyMUD Times --------------------- page 20 -- Here's a question about what you like best. Even though the question is phrased so it deals with other things than areas, most answers are about that; according to the infamous wizlist, the most popular area is currently Vincents (things to do) and Readis (money and experience). --- * What (or who's area) do you like most - and perhaps why? Lan: I liked Mishra's, but it's closed now. Nib has a good one. Dagoth's is nice. Mostly because of the kills. All "knight areas" Hans area ofc =) Aphextwin's for the "scary" roomdesc. Kherec: Firelight's and Readis' area. Just go there, and actually read their descriptions, and explore their area, and you will know why I like it soo much. Barbarella: Generally I enjoy areas that transport you to another place with vivid descriptions and details. Celeborn, Leowon, Andra and Erendi - just to name a few - all have excellent areas. Padrone's area will remain one of my favorites partly because it was one of the first that I explored, and contains perhaps my favorite room in the MUD... Anonymous: Thumper's! I just wish it would be open soon. Ferrodor: What do I like most: New interesting things coded, mortals/wizards trying to make the game more enjoyable. (Like the hut of positive thinking) Mihaiu: The most iteresting area i ever waked through is Andra's. Beldin: Leowon's area is my favorite in-game area for its level of complexity, excellent use of language, degree of challenge, and fundamental design. Vincent's for his quests rock! The area is also thought through. Mistral: Banshees nice, Panic's, Vincent's and so one..:) Leowon: Kiki & Iceblink's Canterbury, Bixby's area, Kent. Nyoni: I love the ones that not everyone goes to -- where you can always find fresh kills. And of course, Nyoni's area is the best. Enoch: I just told you buttmunch! (Brom's and Banshee's) Charisma: Well, of course I like my own area best! Nah, it basically sucks. But, I can't say that there is anyone's I like best. One that was pretty cool when I got bored and started playing again was Kingen's. I think. Taren: No comment. Gurk: I love Celeborns area, its really nice made, even tho its old... one new area I've been impressed of is Barbarella's area... its so darn BS'ly++ well writtin I can't say there is any better out there. Nasigoreng: Vincent's, Caerlon, Caymar, Gurk's, Aphextwin's ... There are a lot more really great areas out there that I can't think of right now. Cathbad: Apart from my own? Anywhere which has bunnies is good in my book. Some people think killing dragons is what it's about but personally I think there's something immensely gratifying about killing bunnies. Oh ok...Chino's area. Not because it's particularly great, it just amuses me to see how she's represented Kent. I always found the place a lot more dull. Lourdes: While I don't have a true favorite, I enjoy Vincent's area and series of quests quite a bit for its attention to detail and accuracy. Smygelfh: Mishra's area totally rocked. Too bad it's gone. Despite the irritating quests, I have Vincent's whole area as a favourite. Dagoth's also deserves to be mentioned. Ilyrion: Leowon's Lys: Dagoths as it keeps growing, improving, has lots to look at, variety and he responds to tyopes, ideas etc. Leowons, pretty much the same reasons, plus interesting puzzles. Barbarella's, best descriptions on this mud. Evocative, I'd swear I can smell, feel and hear it. Every other area looks flat after being in that area. Meep: Leowon's, Aphextwin's, Mthead's and I've always enjoyed Ingis Lane. Mishra: My own, because it's closed and I can do whatever I want there :). Anonymous (2nd): Vincents' - a complete area Title: Re: The NannyMUD Times issue 1999 Summer. And now, the opposite: unpopular areas and/or phenomena. Back in 1990, your area could be considered bad if it contained too many things, a bit later if you had too many descriptions. Things have changed. --- * What (or who's area) do you dislike most - and perhaps why? Lan: Well I'm a"client flap", as some puts it. I like to be able to speedwalk to areas. Don't really like areas with 10 monsters with the same name wandering about. Some variety is good Kherec: I don't really dislike any area, I might not like every area, but I don't dislike all the areas I don't like. Barbarella: I can't remember any by name because I usually never stay in a bad area for very long. Areas that do not bother to describe the items from the description, are poorly tested and contain lots of careless typos, or do not display any imagination certainly displease me. And if I never see another area based on Tolkien, TSR, or Wheel of Time... fine with me. Ferrodor: What I dislike most: RULES regulating 'normal' wizards, in order to make the admin like demigods compared to them. Guilds poorly tended after. Players, playing to make the mud a worse place. Anonymous: Vincent's - too many unique features make it easy for one player to spoil quests and exploration for others Beldin: I still don't like Panic's areas at all, mostly because I dislike the fundamental design and also the way Panic designs his hard monsters. It's possible to make a monster which can only be beaten by the best players, without making the monster a deathtrap to the rest. If Panic has learned that lesson, he never applied it to his area. Jaskier: Banshee's because of the gnats and black knight who steals your money. Additionally Mark the massaur made me loose my whole eq few times. And there's the dreaded vampire tower. Mistral: *shrug* dont know :) Leowon: (As a former topography admin, I'm too polite for this one too.) Think: Hmmm dont know really... but the bifrost is hard as hell to find if you lose it Enoch: Hans, it's such I great challenge to kill his guards, I always die there. :( Charisma: Hehe, I like my own area the worst. Umm, I don't like areas with weirdly formatted text. Taren: No comment. Gurk: Area I dislike would perhaps be my own area =) Nasigoreng: Since Profezzorns area is removed, i'll have to pick another! Padland is a strong candidate, just a large plain. Angmar lacks detail. Morc. Lourdes: Those which lack detail and accuracy. Smygelfh: I really hate parts of QQQQ's, which I can't see how they fit in. I generally dislike everything with illogical structure. Like areas where you go n e s w and end up far away from the original spot. Ilyrion: Gwendolyn's - (no shortdescs) Lys: Areas I dislike are ones where I can't exa anything. I also dislike areas that haven't been thoroughly tested before opening, and that don't get fixed quickly. (quickly = less than a week) Meep: Barbarella's - because I've never found it. Mishra: None actually, every area is unique in its own way, thus making it interesting. ---------------------- The NannyMUD Times --------------------- page 22 -- Ah, the good old days. Things were better back then, weren't they? When everything that was of any important was separate objects in the rooms, there were uptimes of 4h and less than 10 players online. Ah, those were the days... Now to the question: --- * What is the thing from the 'Good ol' times' you miss most? (and by 'thing' I mean area, wizard, player, weapon, guild feeling and so on - mainly anything) Kherec: Well, that would be Moonchild's area and quests. Barbarella: Scots Club may not qualify as cute, but it rocked a helluva lot harder than Chat club or any other club I've ever seen. As for cute, well... if you can call the Damned's old wolf cub peeing on Arthur's leg cute, that'd be the feature I miss the most. Ferrodor: Mistress. and Profezzorn's area. Anonymous: Nymph. This place lost a bit of it's soul when Nymph left. Mihaiu: One more thing, why they removed Orc Train Area :( Beldin: Profezzorn's quests, area, guild, and presence as an active coder and administrator. When Profezzorn left, we lost a great coder and one of the best areas in the game. While the MUD has gone on without him, the mud would be a better place if he had stayed. Gwendolyn still pats me on the head frequently, but it's just not the same as when Prof did it. :) Mistral: Valhalla :) Leowon: Not knowing how things worked behind the scenes. Nyoni: I miss the way shouts and lines (especially the Mage's guild line) used to be FUNNY Also, I miss having wizards change people's titles on a whim. Think: Laf good ol' times? Im still a newbie (ask keldo he'll tell ya)... I dont have any good ol' times. Enoch: Joints, removeable chaos armour for khorne, recall, fingers, etc etc, everything that used to be bs. Also -I miss partying with Lofetu, and to build bikecycles.. Taren: In a way I miss part of the spirit. People enjoyed playing the game, found new things and did not complain that much. Gurk: From the old days, I miss the money bugs... and ofc, I miss Trident of Doom in its buggy edition... Nasigoreng: Hehe, I miss Profezzorns quests (not that they where good, on the contrary, they where among the worst, but they were worth a lot of qp and I knew the solution too them). I miss the Kitten guild, I thought it was filling a place here, too bad it was so buggy because it was fun to play and the mass heals were great. I miss almost nothing else, changes are generally for the better. Cathbad: Druidic camaraderie. Lourdes: Prophets! Lys: Taking the 'Good ol' times' to mean before I wizzed, I miss prof's area (especially that monolith) and moonchild's Tower of Games, the most. People I miss most would be Joss, Dunstan and Mistress, not necessarily in any order. Meep: Areas - Gruhl's, Dwinbar's and Profezzorn's Player- Smurf Weapon - Sword of Madness Guild - The old camelot and the holy hand grenade. Damned & Prophets General - PK week Mishra: I'll restrict myself to two things here, else there would be too much here, those things is: Berserk - Old knight guild thing and Chesterfield Sofa - Very nice thing to carry with you :). Title: Re: The NannyMUD Times issue 1999 Summer. Post by: Polar on September 07, 2006, 09:02:24 AM ---------------------- The NannyMUD Times --------------------- page 23 --
The rules, the rules... nobody loves them, but you cannot live without them; this is evident since all of them were created as needed. Common sense is a rare thing. --- * If you could make one change to the game's rules, what would it be? Barbarella: I don't know that there is any one rule you could change or add that would be a huge improvement. Many of the rules we have now unforunately are responses to extreme violations of what would usually be considered common sense. So, if anything, I would make a rule requiring common sense as a prerequisite to logging in. (Yes, well - at least it fits the 'fantasy' theme.) Leowon: Wizard-controlled quests (I'd like it, but it probably wouldn't work). Nyoni: You have to pass an intelligence test to log in. Think: NO whining to wizards about guild powers because of pk... guilds werent designed for pk they were designed to play the game... pk is just a side option Taren: Oh, you know, I can change them already... ;) Gurk: Let me patch my 2nds things =) Nasigoreng: I would clarify what is meant by giving quest hints, and how one can help each other with quests. As it is now it is very easy to solve 99% of a quest and not get the final syntax right, and nobody is going to help you because they fear banishment. A more open policy regarding quest hints would lessen the high demand on questsheets. Cathbad: Oh various wizard stuff. Lourdes: That equipment would go back to not deteriorating while you are linkdead. Lys: I think the mud has an overabundance of low non-contributing wizards. A rule to change the status of any wiz not achieving at least level 23 within a year might be in order. After that years, make them a sort of demi-wizard. They would lose the ability to go invis, clone, patch, echo or any other wiz power that can be abused. They could keep an ability to design silly titles, have free tells, join clubs and hang out. And ofc they would be free to reapply to work on coding again someday if they could show some ability and motivation to code and contribute to the game construtively. Meep: Make jello the only portable healing available. Mishra: Make it so that wizards aren't allowed to have secondchars - but give them free hands to snoop and stat things. I know this is impossible to control, but who's going to kill me for dreaming? ---------------------- The NannyMUD Times --------------------- page 24 -- The survey now turns to delving into what some players think would improve the game. --- * If you could make one change to the game, what would it be? Barbarella: As long as we're still in the realm of fantasy, I suppose I would seek a way to attract and retain more quality players. Players who take the time to really learn the game and provide feedback to the wizards make it more rewarding to create, and presumably evolve into good wizards when the time comes for them to move on. Presumably. Leowon: A real LPC programming manual. Nyoni: I'm working on it, ok? Think: I want my old shell back (for my mortals)! I miss print! *pout* I cant add worth a flip hehe. Taren: I would like to see smarter monsters added, more monsters that use feelings, intelligent fighting etc. Gurk: Allow multiwielding of weapons =) Nasigoreng: I would change the qp assignment of the quests. Make alot of low level quests worth more and remove qp from the top quests. The reason is that most (not all) really high qp quests are really illogical and are extremely difficult without hints or questsheets and very simple once you got one. As it is now you can solve all quests at the bottom but still be only half way to wizard. Cathbad: A generic poison system. Lys: I'd make all of the main village a no fight area so PKs would go elsewhere. Ideally, I'd like to confine their activity to an area so the rest of us don't have to be aware they even exist. But since that's a personal preference, I doubt I'll ever see that happen. Meep: To drop the fantasy theme and turn Nanny into a giant replica of The attack of the killer tomatoes. Mishra: I'd make it possible for mortals to wield two weapons. ---------------------- The NannyMUD Times --------------------- page 25 -- There once was a system here by which high-wizards were picked by vote. That was scrapped back in 1994 or so after some spectacular failures. Here is a reminder of it, along the lines 'it was better back then'. The Editor notes that some anonymous second-character wishes to have me back as High-wiz. I could perhaps remind him that I was one of those selected through voting back in 1994. :) --- * If you could choose the next high wizard, who would you pick? Barbarella: (Asside from dragging Leowon kicking and screaming out of retirement) I think Hans would be a good candidate - very solid coding skills, maturity and a long history with the MUD. Leowon: I'm too old for kid stuff like that. :-) Nyoni: Beldin already got the job. Think: Snafu ofc :) Although i dont think he is interested. Taren: No comment. Gurk: Leowon and Dwinbar would be perfect!!!! =) Cathbad: Nobody. I say get rid of the lot of them and live in a self-regulating commune! Lys: Pass this one. I am not qualified to answer it. Meep: Barbarella, if she tells me where her area is. Mishra: Guest. Anonymous (2nd): Brom. ---------------------- The NannyMUD Times --------------------- page 26 -- Here is then the last survey question. It is a question with a natural cintinuing survey as a result, but for now, this is it. --- * What other questions I ought to have asked you and I forgot ?:) Kherec: No idea. Barbarella: "Where do you want your files sent?" (In the event I piss off anyone so much they decide to demote me.) Beldin: If you could make one change to the game's rules, what would it be? If you could make one change to the game, what would it be? If you could choose the next high wizard, who would you pick? Please note that I won't answer these questions, because they are not appropriate questions for an administrator to answer. But you should ask that of mortals and regular wizards. Jaskier: "Which message board is most useful/funny/important/etc?", "Do you read message boards?", "Do you post to message boards?" "Do you answer quest mails?" Mistral: Dont know - u re journalist :) Leowon: "Why everyone should play a vampire at least once during their time on Nanny" maybe? ;-) Nyoni: What's your favorite place to heal? Charisma: One question you could have asked me is why do I come back time and time again? Why does anyone have such a facination with this text place? Cathbad: "What are you drinking?" Meep: If you ate pasta and antipasta, would you still be hungry? ---------------------- The NannyMUD Times --------------------- page 27 -- Announcement - the Chat club. There is now a global chat-line available for the whole of the MUD through a membership in the Chat club. It can be reached from Lazlar square, which can be found some north from the yard outside the Rose and Dragon, the local village pub. You know how to find that one, don't you? The Chat-line is very cheap, albeit not free, to use, costing just a single spell-point per message. A tell over the line costs seven spell-points. > > read page 28 But there are less pages than that! |
