Post by: poogie on August 15, 2004, 08:13:25 PM
What are some of your favourite quotes? They can be about life, love, whatever. They can be song lyrics or pieces of poetry, things that inspire you or help you sustain your resolve.....

Here are just a few of my favourites, I have quotes everywhere....on my computer, in my planner, scribbled on pieces of paper around my apartment, etc. I love movie quotes and song lyrics but I'll dig all the really good ones out later.

"when the world is puddle-wonderful..."
ee cummings
(I really love that image of those days when it's raining and you go out in the rain and jump in the puddles. That is so awesome, totally incredible. =))

"If you label me, you negate me."
  anonymous

(when you were a kid did you ever wonder who "anonymous" was? he always had the best quotes of all! :p)

"Snakes have no arms, that's why they don't wear vests."
  Vertigoii

(former nannymudder, this always makes me laugh for some reason. Yes, I'm a dork too.)

"Life's meaning is love's magic."
anonymous

"Si la estupidez es una virtud, uds son virtuosos." (If stupidity is a virtue, you all are virtuous.)
  At the University of Peru

"Men always want to be a woman's first love; women have a more subtle instinct, what they like is to be a man's last romance."
anonymous

"Comedy is life viewed from a distance, tragedy, life in a close up."
  Charlie Chaplin

"I may never get an Oscar but at least I'll have a game."
  Kevin Bacon

"Nothing great in this world has been accomplished without passion."
  Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel

"If you don't have anything to do, don't do it here."
  SSG Ray Emerson

(He was one of my sergeants when I was stationed in Hawaii.)

"Always do sober what you said you'd do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut."
  Ernest Hemingway

I'll have more later. :D

I like the two person quote (1st in latin might be mis-spelt - heck I have hard enough time just spelling in English)

"Dulce et decorum est pro patria morie."

"Heck no! It is far sweeter and more noble to let the other idiot die for his."

Annonymous - I think.

The other quote I like was used by my Engineering Physics teacher who could not understand why humanity majors thought his classes were a good science elective over something like general science.

(It sounded better in latin but I only know the English translation).

You can't make sugar from sh!t.

I don't know where this is from, I originally saw it in Mouser's plan:

"A woman is often measured by the things she cannot control.
She is measured by the way her body curves or doesn't curve,
by where she is flat or straight or round.
She is measured by 36-24-36 and inches and ages and numbers,
by all the outside things that don't ever add up to who she
is on the inside.
And so if a woman is to be measured, let her be measured by
the things she can control, by who she is and who she is
trying to become. Because as every woman knows,
measurements are only statistics.
And statistics lie."

Most of my favourite quotes, I do not know who said or wrote, but here is a few of them, and I do believe I may have translated some of them wrong as well...

I rather be alone, than in a bad company.

Make friends while you don't need them.

To fail is human, but to really mess up takes a computer.

As a rule I avoid temptations, unless they are unresistable - Mae West

He who believes he knows everything, knows nothing.

Poor is he who wishes for more.

The best way to be fooled, is to believe you are so much smarter than everyone else.

I sometimes like to write this on blackboard without saying a word... it takes kids a few minutes to realize it ;)

(I hope my translation is correct)

"CAUTION! Before activating your tongue, please check your brain is connected."

Tarzan, in the middle of black Africa, is white.

- I know I have faults, we all have faults. You know, my greatest
fault is that I just don't realize just how good I am.

There's one we used to hang on our cubicles...a guy has his head stuck..well..where the sun don't shine...and it says something to the effect of:

Sometimes it's good to see things from the customer's point of view.

*snicker*

Ty Webb: Do you take drugs Danny?

Danny Noonan: Everyday.

Ty Webb: Good, so what's the problem?

  -Caddyshack

"One day you'll know what love truly is.  It's the sour and the sweet. And I know sour, which allows me to appreciate the sweet."

  -Jason Lee in 'Vanilla Sky'

I know I should get next to you
You've got a look that makes me think you're cool
I know it's just sexual attraction
It's not for real so I better keep a whackin'

Why bother?
It's gonna hurt me
It's gonna kill when you desert me
This happened to me twice before
It won't happen to me anymore

  -Weezer  'Why Bother' from "Pinkerton"

And of course just about any line by Gene Wilder in 'Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory'

I was watching some tv the other day, a rerun of Friends. And our dear Rachel had just finnished reading a book about some attic and wind and how the guys always steal the ladies wind. She was a little upset with Ross at one point and she said the very unforgetable words:

How do you expect me to grow, when you wont let me blow?

I just love that quote.

Quotes are something I collect...  so to keep this from being pages and pages and pages long, I'll just take the favorite from the first few pages of the file.

"You need only reflect that one of the best ways to get yourself a reputation as a dangerous citizen these days is to go about repeating the very phases which our founding fathers used in the struggle for independence."
   -Charles A. Beard

The Old Testament says it was considered a miracle for an ass to speak, and now nothing short of a miracle will keep one quiet
      -Life magazine, 1896

Hold it!  Everybody freeze!  One of the sandwiches just moved!
   -Hawkeye

Each snowflake in an avalanche pleads not guilty.
   -Stanislaw Lem

Nothing in life is to be feared.  It is only to be understood.
   -Marie Curie

"Exactly.  There are all sorts of dream interpretations.  Freud's being the most notorious, but I have always believed that they serve a simple eliminatory function, and not much more - that dreams are the psyche's way of taking a good dump every now and then.  And that people who don't dream - or don't dream in a way that they can remember when they wake up - are mentally constipated in some way.  After all, the only practical compensation for having a nightmare is waking up and realizing that it was just a dream."
-Glen Bateman, Stephen King's The Stand

Peace is better than war, because in peace the sons bury their fathers, but in war the fathers bury their sons.
   -Croesus to Cambyrses

"One good reason for looking again at the Second World War is to remind ourselves how badly the world's leaders performed and how bravely they were supported by their suffering populations.  Half a century has passed, and the time has come to sweep away the myths and reveal the no less inspiring gleam of that complex and frightening time in which evil was in the ascendant, goodness diffident, and the British - impetuous, foolish, and brave beyond measure - the world's only hope.
   -Len Deighton

You can't depend upon your judgment when your imagination is out of focus.
   -Mark Twain

"Lay then the axe to the root, and teach governments humanity.  It is their sanguinary punishments which corrupt mankind."
   -Thomas Paine

"I do not say this lightly.  I've asked myself many times whether my work in the Resistance was worth losing my health, my marriage, and ten years of my life, which is what it took before I could get hold of my nerves, get my energy back, and give myself completely to my work.  Was it worth those endless nights, for years after the war, waking up from terrible nightmares, fighting, screaming, and soaking wet?  ...Was everything I did for the Resistance really worth everything I went through in the KZ's and would I do it again?
My answer is still the same.  Yes.  Because without freedom life is nothing.  Never, never, do I want to live - or have those I love live - in hate, fear, and suppression.  And yes, yes, I would do it again.  And again and again."
   -Svend Aage Holm Soreson

"Words are...the most powerful drug used by mankind."
   -Rudyard Kipling

There's a sampling.

Mahatma Gandhi
