Title: Kid names
Post by: poogie on August 11, 2004, 10:58:39 PM
What do you think of this trend of people, especially famous ones, naming their kids really strange things like Rumer, Apple, etc? Is it being original or has it gone too far?
/P

You forgot "Coco."  It's a rather strange phenomenon, in my opinion.  I would hope that I never happen to meet someone named "Smudge", other than myself, of course.

The whole thing seemed to lose a lot of it's appeal after Moon Unit and Dweezil Zappa.
Not like I expect anyone to top that.

A name has it's origin in the respective people's history, religion or simply personal beliefs. So it should not be us the ones to judge that since we are not part of their community.
In my personal oppinion...a name has too little importance, especially when there are some laws i think wich allows you to change it as you see fit.

This is generally true, but Poogie is talking about people that actually almost do the opposite! They give their children names that are more or less never seen before in their community! Most obvious is it with some famous people, that probably work harder when coming up with a name for the kid than when bringing the kid up...

That is true also. In Romania gypsies give their kids famous names hoping this will bring them good fortune in their most common business...begging!
But...i think their belief is true since they keep this custom alive

I think it's fun, if no new names ever was invented we'd all be named "Hrggff" and "Arrhhff" (or "Adam" and "Eve" if you believe in that religion) ;)
I like spaced out names, just hope the prejudice part of society doesn't find them a reason to hurt people.

And I know atleast one that has named his offspring after one of his nannuMUD characters (don't know if he invented it himself or if it is a real name, it's not like r0xx0rs or something like that anyways hehe) \;)

I also believe it to be natural that new names on real person comes from the environment you live in.

A bad name can affect the child's personality, so by the time he'd be old enough to change it the damage would have already been done. I wouldn't name my child Doughnut just cause he/she seemed sweet and puffy when born.

yeah, hate that names can make children picked on by other kids, remember when I was in kindergarden, certain names were "cool" among the kids, so those kids were popular, then there was names that were "uncool" and those kids were picked on by the "cool" kids. I fortunately was in the middle gray area.

but the "uncool" names were normal names, like Peter for example, so hard to predict what names will make your kid victim for evil kids. I mean Doughnut might be the coolest name on the kindergarden, kids have different logic than us grownups ;)

If you're referring to Melina, then yes, I do believe that is a real name.

There are other very strange names out there and one of the best things about strange names, is how unordinary they are and how easy they are to remember.

I resent that! I'll have you know that I named my kid Coco!   :x

Well, okay, I admit my 'kid' is a little on the feathered side..........

I've always loved that name, and yes, it's a real name, means yellow, happy, joyous ... and the fact I have a char on the mud with that name is just a coincidence (that of me liking the name), not that I came up with the name for the char and then slapped it on my child.

And I think some leeway is acceptable when it comes to names, but some people really should be taken out back and shot, for their lack of respect for their loved ones ... like those naming their kids like "Dude Williams" or other 'cool' names without any other meaning except that of being 'cool'.

I like it too, it's a good name, I was thinking naming my son if I ever had one for Grim :)

In my home country I've heard gipsy names like Zorro, Rambo, Winettoo or however is spelled. That's lame.
I have no idea what name would I chose, will think about that when it comes to that.

Same for me except I haven't had (and probably won't have) a daughter named Izabella so I named one of my knightesses that.

Well, anyways, given the names given to us from everyone when Melina was conceived, namely 'Ellert', 'The Monster Ellert' in full ... I think we picked a good name ;)

And Grim, I don't know if it works with your last name Kymn ;)

You know, it just happened to occur to me yesterday, but bearing these unusual names must cause some stress for these kids.  I imagine this is the case even when the name ultimately serves the individual well as an adult.  Case in point:

Evel Kenievel (that's pronounced Evil for those of you too young to remember this motorcycle daredevil).  Interesting, a man who was so famous, more because of his name than his accomplishments, names his own son "Robbie."

The problem would be solved if only we name the new generation as we name our cats.  Flompus, Fuzzbuzzle, Piewhacket.  Then nobody has a wierd name except poor Jenny.  Let's face it -- that would be the best thing.

I don't have a problem with people giving their kids wierd names. Although I can see how it might be hard on the kids. And ok, in some cases, the names are stupid, like if you really did give a boy a girls name like Sue or something. It's not as bad the other way around, since many girls names started out as boys names. I personally tend to like ordinary-ish names, and Irish or Scottish names (picked my nick out of a book of Gaelic names, except I sortof mushed the spelling between Gaelic and Anglicized versions, ie. Ciaran vs Kieran). My favorite names tend to be: Jonathan, Alexandra (or variants), and Sebastien.
