Title: A long time ago - 17 July 2004 Post by: poogie on July 17, 2004, 12:21:09 AM Sorry for the huge delay folks, my internet connection has been out and it probably will be again soon if I can move like I want to but I promise to make it up to you folks later, if not sooner. :D
If you were given the choice of which of your 5 senses to lose, or else one would be randomly taken from you, which one would you choose to lose and why? /P Title: A long time ago - 17 July 2004 Post by: Carrion on July 17, 2004, 02:06:02 AM I'd go for smell, even though that would be a great loss too.
Title: A long time ago - 17 July 2004 Post by: Smudge on July 17, 2004, 02:15:46 AM Wouldn't losing your sense of smell mean losing your sense of taste as well?
Title: A long time ago - 17 July 2004 Post by: Yavathol on July 17, 2004, 12:49:51 PM First my answer:
Taste Second, to answer Smudge's question - yes Most of what people experience as taste is actually due to their sense of smell. That small proportion of people (about 2%) that are born with extremely impared senses of smell have no way to recognize that foods and drink have less flavor compared to others. If you happen to meet someone who has had a cancer that has impaired their sense of smell, however, they will tell you that nothing tastes as "full" or "good" as it used to. Title: A long time ago - 17 July 2004 Post by: Qwer on July 18, 2004, 06:31:34 PM I love my stomach, but taste.
Smell seems a good choice but still... food is just something necessary but I think I'd keep smell because there are so many special smells out there. I like the smell of forests... I do turn my head if I smell some nice perfume; I am curious who that woman can be who smells so good... so I'd keep smell. Obviously the others are even more important to me. I think, sight especially. PS: Great to have you back, Poogus. Title: A long time ago - 17 July 2004 Post by: dulcineea on July 20, 2004, 05:09:37 AM Taste.
If it smells right it must taste well  Title: A long time ago - 17 July 2004 Post by: garetjax on July 22, 2004, 07:36:45 PM Wait! Why can't I lose my 6th sense? That thing only seems to get me into trouble :P
Well, ever since I destroyed my olfactory glands in a carbon monoxide accident when I was young, I haven't been able to smell very well. (And you thought everything tasted like chicken before ;) ) Now it only seems to work with extreme smells (for good or bad). Since I've lived for a bit in this mode, I don't think I'd miss losing the rest of my sense of smell. Title: A long time ago - 17 July 2004 Post by: Yavathol on July 22, 2004, 09:08:09 PM Ah, and hence why I would give up my taste buds, having a sense of smell. Most of what people call "taste" in food is actually due to "leftover" smellreceptors and are fed through the olfactory areas as well.
Sorry to hear about your being olfactorally challenged, Garetjax. Title: A long time ago - 17 July 2004 Post by: maximus on July 23, 2004, 01:41:32 PM sight. Don't feel like explaining why.
Title: A long time ago - 17 July 2004 Post by: Qwer on July 23, 2004, 03:55:03 PM I guess exploring in the dark is more fun.
Title: A long time ago - 17 July 2004 Post by: eris on July 27, 2004, 10:23:21 AM Taste seems the obvious answer. I would miss it the least.
However, if the loss would only be temporary, I would choose hearing. I would like to work with deaf children "when I grow up" and would like to be able to better empathize with them. /Eris Title: A long time ago - 17 July 2004 Post by: Sharky on July 27, 2004, 03:25:02 PM Although I love a good meal I must admit I'd also go for taste...
The sense I'd never, ever want to lose (only the thought of such a loss terrifies me) is sight. Title: A long time ago - 17 July 2004 Post by: poogie on July 30, 2004, 11:17:04 PM I too would have to go for taste. The others I enjoy way too much and if I chose taste then I could eat that nasty, boring, healthy food and not drink coca cola because it wouldn't matter.
/P Title: A long time ago - 17 July 2004 Post by: Snapple on August 15, 2004, 04:41:56 PM Well, if i could lose my ability to distinguish colors, that would be something positive. Not being able to tell a green eyed blonde from the rest would be nice 8)
Title: A long time ago - 17 July 2004 Post by: poogie on August 15, 2004, 04:52:36 PM You know you love all other green eyed blondes save me so why try to fight it? :p
