Title: 30 May 2004 - 5 June 2004 Post by: poogie on May 30, 2004, 08:26:25 PM What are some foods that you see other people eating that you find totally disgusting? I'm not talking about brussel sprouts and liver (although if you like those you might want to post it here as some weird stuff that you DO eat). I'm talking about pretty everyday things or maybe in some other country they eat it and it seems really strange to you. Again, not stuff like dog which seems strange to most of us.
I hate Jell-O. It goes back to when I had my tonsils removed and they made me eat Jell-O before I could leave the hospital. I've never been able to eat it since then. Labyrinth had mentioned (she thought it might be) marshmallows that we Americans eat (and probably others) but many people from other countries thought that was pretty gross..... /P (feel free to expound on this subject some) :D Title: 30 May 2004 - 5 June 2004 Post by: Yavathol on May 30, 2004, 08:45:52 PM At the risk of sounding a bit odd - I actually am rather put off by all pork products. From someone that thinks beef cooked to medium is over done, and enjoys raw fish on a fairly regular basis, that's probably saying something. The list of rationalizations I have for this is quite long, and I won't bother going into it. Just suffice it to say that the smell of bacon can turn my stomach.
Title: 30 May 2004 - 5 June 2004 Post by: Smudge on May 30, 2004, 09:18:19 PM I don't like rare meat (probably the opposite of you, Yavathol...in my opinion, meat has to be cooked all the way through ;)). Steak that is pink inside or even hints at the slightest bit of blood is not stomach-able. Same goes for eggs - they need to be solid on the inside, and can only be slightly soft, but not runny. The sunny-side up eggs that collapse and spill their yolky innards when prodded with a fork are not for me.
Title: 30 May 2004 - 5 June 2004 Post by: Kherec on May 31, 2004, 03:15:45 AM Pickled herring (especially in mustard) turns my stomach, also any kind of dish with brocoli in it (had it when I was little, threw up, haven't been able to eat it since).
As a side note ... this is kinda weird, but I can't eat onions, raw or fried. I always use it when I cook etc, but I remove it afterwards. I like the taste they add to the dish, but can't eat them afterwards *chuckles*. This is funny too because I'm a sucker for garlic. Title: 30 May 2004 - 5 June 2004 Post by: Carrion on May 31, 2004, 06:07:36 AM Can't really come up with something for this thread... I don't find any normal 'western-civilization-oriented' food that disgusting, even though I'm not that fond of all food...
I was a bit over sensitive for mould for a while though, after eating too much of it (when moving to my own place, the bread always seemed to go bad in just a couple of hours, and I definitely didn't want to throw it away), but that over sensitivity is gone now... Another story is HOW people eat, it can be pretty disgusting to watch some people eat ;) Title: 30 May 2004 - 5 June 2004 Post by: ladychris on May 31, 2004, 08:14:27 AM I think there is absolutely no food i find disgusting. There are some foods that i like more than other, but i can eat almost everything :)
And about other countries cuisine I'm absolutely curious, if I had the chance I would try everything, fried bugs and snake stew included :) And in case you want to be disgusted, thats some of the food i love and that most ppl would hardly eat: *liver, kidneys and stuff... *raw shellfish (oysters and similar) (although i admit it may be dangerous and go very carefully with it) *horse meat (and all americans will probably puke now) *fried eggs (sunny side up) and even raw eggs (thats for you , Smudge) ;) Hmmm if i think a bit might come up with more, but i guess its enough. Oh and if you have any foreign friend and you dont like his/her cuisine, but dont want to put him/her down, remember to invite me ;) Title: 30 May 2004 - 5 June 2004 Post by: Qwer on May 31, 2004, 11:36:25 AM Hmm, the raw shellish and the raw egg doesn't sound very O.K. but the rest would be eatable I guess.. I have eaten horse meat and it wasn't bad. I don't necessarily like it but it's decent food.
I don't really like raw - or almost - meat either, would have a hard time eating it. Disgusted? Hmm, duno... I eat almost everything, well that's not hard to tell if you saw me irl. Title: 30 May 2004 - 5 June 2004 Post by: eris on May 31, 2004, 03:09:40 PM Ohh! I can't stand Jell-o either. It is texture thing for me...just eww!
Maraschino cherries top my list. Apparently when I was about 3 we went to eat and while we were waiting for a table the bartender kept giving me maraschino cherries. Then when we got our table every waiter who walked by would bring me some. I nearly made myself sick. Lemon in water is another one (don't like lemonade either). Like lemons otherwise, but I will send back a glass of water if it has had lemon in it, on it or anywhere near it. As to meat I like my steaks medium or even medium rare depending on the cut, but ground meat such as burger patties I must have well done...even slightly charred. /Es Title: 30 May 2004 - 5 June 2004 Post by: bahamet on May 31, 2004, 10:05:59 PM Anchovies...... I can't stand those things how can anyone else?

YUM!!! You forgot brains though... I love brains if they're properly prepared! I must say that I don't have any problems with food. I'm a true food lover and I try to enjoy what's offered. Steaks and eggs should be well done though :) Title: 30 May 2004 - 5 June 2004 Post by: Snafu on June 01, 2004, 11:40:32 AM Broccoli and Brussel Sprouts I love.
Raw onions rule but only if they are sweet vidalia onions. I can eat those like an apple. I used to curse when I was younger, just so I could get jalapeno pepper, until my mother figured it out and started using dish soap!! Ewwwww. As for meat and eggs, can't eat them raw or uncooked. The one food I can't stand is sauerkraut. I think that stems from when I lived in Germany as a kid. I will eat almost anything, ask Labyrinth ;) /Snafu :D Title: 30 May 2004 - 5 June 2004 Post by: Allyene on June 01, 2004, 06:54:03 PM Hmm, lots of things... but one thing really comes into mind:
Isterband... Dont know the English word, if there even is one, but it is some kind of disgusting, smoked sausage. I tasted it in school once, and will never do it again. STAY AWAY!! Hmm, and I have to agree on the anchovies thingy. Title: 30 May 2004 - 5 June 2004 Post by: Snafu on June 01, 2004, 07:00:21 PM Oh yeah! I forgot anchovies! Agree hard! Disgusting!!

It just really disgusts me for some reason, i despise it! Also, i think the worst is when someone smothers something with parmesan, it is just so wrong. Why the hell do people drown out the flavor of good food with that crap? It irritates me no end!! (yes, i realise that i need help) Title: 30 May 2004 - 5 June 2004 Post by: Yberiel on June 02, 2004, 12:35:37 AM That would be that scottish dish.. Haggis? is it? That sheepstomach stuffed with stuff, I believe it is anyway. I have not seen it been eaten in person, only on TV, but just the thought of it... *eeps* Thank you, but no thank you, I say..
Otherwise there is not much food that others eat that I find disgusting.. Ybbie.. Title: 30 May 2004 - 5 June 2004 Post by: garetjax on June 02, 2004, 04:47:43 AM Stuff I tried and will never endeavor never to touch again:
1. Balut. Philipino dish thats basically a bird egg that has a chick thats almost developed inside it. I tried it as a kid so I don't remember how it tastes but I do remember the sight really bothered me then and even more so now. 2. Cow Tongue. It doesn't really disgust me as I can stomach it, I'm just really reluctant to chew it. 3. Blood Pudding. I'm trying really hard not to remember this one. No more blood food for me... :? 4. Chicken feet/ pig's feet. I have a hard time eating food that I can still recognize what part of the animal something came from. These asian dishes are the worst offenders that always seem to cross my path when dining with my family. Stuff I won't even try just by the look/sound/description/smell of it: 1. Sheeps Head 2. Monkey Brains Stuff that made me gag when I was a kid but can now eat: 1. Rice Porridge. Ugh, when I was about 4, my aunt force fed this stuff to me and I barfed it all over her (got spanked for that). After that, I could never look at a bowl of the stuff without gagging a bit. Fast forward about 2 decades later where I lose a bet and am forced to eat it. I found it not bad (turns out my aunt's porridge just sucks :P ) 2. Shrimp. This one, I'm not sure why I hated it and how I came around to like them. Go figure. I just can't stand to eat the tail now. (and the legs and eyeballs have got to go too...) Noone should be force-fed..and if so, then through an intraveneous drip. /Snafu :D Title: 30 May 2004 - 5 June 2004 Post by: Labyrinth on June 02, 2004, 10:09:05 PM I hate sausage because of those weird little hard things I find when I'm chewing
Water chestnuts I have an aversion to because I don't like that weird way they crunch in my mouth. I do, however, like the crunch of pepperoncinis... I just love the crunch.
Food I don't like. Raw meat ( It makes me really sick, and when we have gatherings, dinner parties and so at work, it is always at a fancy restaurant with raw food. Why is it the more expensive a restaurant is, the poorer the food is? Title: Re: 30 May 2004 - 5 June 2004 Post by: Nilram on June 04, 2004, 04:17:02 PM Quote from: poogie What are some foods that you see other people eating that you find totally disgusting? I simply can't understand how anyone can eat this stuff and it makes me a little sick to see images of people eating it. I'm not sure I'ver ever even tried watermelon (probably have) the smell disgusts me so much. Other melons have a similar affect on me but none to the extent of watermelon. I also can't understand melon scented soaps and shampoos. They stink. So melons especially WATERMELON. Too bad I didn't know before I visited you in 97 ;) /Snafu :D Title: 30 May 2004 - 5 June 2004 Post by: Dissectica on June 13, 2004, 11:24:08 AM Hmm, well..I do have a hard time for potatoes for some reason. I guess that is the main thing I can think of. Oh, and cloudberries also. Theese berries seems to be some kind of golden treasure for most people but I cannot stand eating them, just the thought makes me shiver.
