Title: Your First Day
Post by: Maruja on April 05, 2004, 10:26:16 PM
Do you remember your first day on NannyMUD? Do
you remember how you found out about the MUD? Who was the first player you interacted with?

Another online acquainta
nce gave me addresses for two MUDs, and one of them was Nanny. I could kick myself because I don't remember who it was who
told me. (I'd sure like to thank them.) I don't remember what the other MUD was, either.

My memories of my first
day are not terribly detailed, but a few things stick. The first player to help me out as an utter novice was a player name
d Kila, who was playing from China. He gave me a toga to wear. (I was stylin'.) I spent some time exploring Anvil's newbi
e area and trying to solve what I thought was a puzzle in it. I asked Milamber for help with the puzzle, but he kindly info
rmed me that wizards were not allowed to help with such things. To this day I've never figured out whether it was actually
 a puzzle or not.

That was my first day. What was yours?

My first day, started about 2.5 years ago. I found out about Nanny thro
ugh a friend. I have heard about Nanny from this friend but could not figure out why he found it so addictive. Nanny was al
l he talked about and I thought "But god, it is just a bunch of text.. nothing more!" Anyway, I tried it out.. and who is a
ddictive now?
My first day, as a newbie, was with my character Shannara. She was going to be my testing char. M
y friend told me that he would put a beard on my character when he noticed me there. I never told him what name my characte
r had. But he found out, or he put beard on every newbie that logged in that week? I never got much help in the beginning,
I did not want any help. When I felt secure enough, I started up Yberiel. Whith her, I joined the druid and my very first f
riend I got, and I do not count my friend who showed me Nanny, was Cyrion, the former druid. He showed me around and helped
out alot. The very first one who helped me with a quest was Suiko and the very first one I was in a party with was Alwor.
r
The very first day I do not remember much from, except for the beard thingy, but what my very first friends helped me wi
th, I do remember.
And that Charlie/Snafu called me 'Grasshopper'

Ok, I have not been around since the begg
inning, that's for sure, but it has been a few years now, so I might be running some of this together.  There actually is
a longer version of this story, and if you ask I will probably even share it.  For now though, here goes...

After ha
ving Nanny suggested instead of the Mud I had been on (one devoid of any other players it seemed), I hesitantly logged in a
nd was pretty much overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of players that were on and the amount of Wizards that were interacting
 as well.
I think there were something like 64 mortals and 24 wizards logged in at the time - and to my newbie eyes, the
y all seemed to be in the same room with me.  It was all pretty confusing, actually; so much so that I completely forgot ab
out the newbie guide I had gotten upon starting.

I was actually a bit frustrated for the first couple of levels, bec
ause the people who had told me about Nanny had seemed so friendly, but here I was and I couldn't seem to get the time of
day.  I thought I should persevere in the hopes of seeing those who had summoned me to this busy mecca of text information,
 so I explored some.

I managed to find my way to the Adventurer's guild by sheer luck, I think.  From there I thoug
ht I would branch out slowly in my explorations.  I can still recall my first opponent - and the weapon I used to slay it.
I actually spent most of the first two levels hunting those dastardly rats with the chopsticks that some higher level play
er must have been so generously leaving behind just for players like me! Oh, and the leather jacket! The ultimate protectio
n!
Armed with my mighty chopsticks and shielded with the incredible leather jacket I knew that I could survive in Nann
y.

I think that was when I was run over by a passing wizard and then attacked by a beggar just outside the pub.

r
Oh, well - someweher before I hit level 5 I did find that newbie book and discovered all the great newbie areas!

I got lured into this world by a fellow classmate, an odd duc
k that kept pretty much to himself and while I didn't, we still got to know each other due to the fact we both knew a lot
about computers.

Anyways, he played his Chaos Simyarin, Aldraahn, and told me I should give it a try.

I logge
d on and thought about a name ... and the first thing that popped up was 'Dagoth', from a Conan movie (can't recall exac
tly which one). I didn't know if it was spelled Dagoth or Daagoth so I picked the former and off I went into the world of
Nanny.

I of course joined Simyarins, and arrowed away on the rabbits, as so many of you no doubt did if you thought
of reading the help files. As I grew in level and stats I proceeded and tried out the area near the Stonepub, with those li
ttle critters in the cellars of the houses.

Not much more was accomplished for my first day, but I'm still here, al
most a decade later ;)

I dont remember what year it was, but I remember my first time in Nanny very well. I had seen a class mate playing Nanny and he was playing a druid named Dustwalker. So I logged on and somehow got added to a party with a knight named Permlin. After a few minutes... He dragged me to Arthur where Lan was idling. So I applied... Lan did the short story and asked me if I promised to be a good knight and I replied "sure".  He joined me and I quitted and remained offline for a week or something.,

The game was way too confusng and I got lost and died a lot in attacks. So eventually I quitted knights and joined Kittens instead. Played kittens until I wizzed as Aishiteru.

Then I made lill and rejoined knights. :)

I remember a day in mid-november 1993. A friend at my school named Panic had introduced me to this place.

I remember the first shout I saw: Who killed Terror!!
I was thinking..lots of text, lots of action, fun place.

I remember sitting in church for a bit while Panic and I were partying and he would go around and kill and I would get experience for just sitting there. Now that seemed fun, indeed.

I first joined Mages guild.

I played with characters such as: Musten, Kira, Shaolin, Honey, Bonnetane, Flyer, Tron and many more

I once watched over a player named Hans' items while he went and got a great wand to PK with. He had to become a frog to do it. Rribbbit!

My character name was Wanderer.

I first wizzed in January 1994.

The rest of that charcter is a story for another day ;)

I don't remember much of it. It was a different char, Illegal i believe....got deleted and picked up by another. The player that got me into it was Cost. I was skipping school and I heard about this lab that had internet. So, curious, I entered it. And there was Cost, a former high-school colleague, typing like crazy. He showed me how to play, where to kill, he even gave me my first coins.

Well, thats my story ;)
In spring 2000 I was planning a hiking trip in Sweden for next summer holiday, so was gathering info. Found some guy's site who had a link to Lysator and followed it. It looked interesting, expecially the "games" part ;) I had experienced a few mins in a mud some years before, but never really played so that Nannymud intrigued me a lot :P
... and i clicked that link ;)
Dante would say "Galeotto fu il libro e chi lo scrisse..."
Dont ask me to translate it, but in brief that was how my addiction started :P
Anyway, first thing I did was reading newbie booklet, second looking for a suitable kill - somehow I had the feeling killing monsters was main activity in a mud. Booklet directed me to Dref's area and since a bee seemed me not a worthy kill i tried the rabbit... who killed me :P
Well, I knew all I had to do was go to church and pray, so no harm done (expecially since I had no clue of the xp system).
After that I had to log off, when I came back I found corpse of worker in Ingis lane and it was kinda of a shock. The idea someone might have killed him didn't hit me, I was persuaded he had died for some natural reason, possibly age and that more time in mud had passed since my last log in than iRL (which was not far from truth).
Anyway, I kept exploring, searched most newbie areas and got myself trapped in XXX, I had no ball for swimming and rope had reset (but i thought someone had stolen it). So for first time i shouted for help ;)
I wish I knew who was the hero resquing me, but I dont remember. For sure he was a low level since I was in a newbie area, but that doesn't mean he was a newbie :)
Also one of the first things intriguing me when try to stand in green while everybody spammed me to death by running in every possible direction, was some hunting falcon. I wish I knew if it was Mistress's or Valdor's or Yavathol's... for sure it was in that moment I decided I would be a knight :) I worked all summer on advancing my char and in september I felt I was rdy. Mistress joined me, but that is another story...

That XXX in previous note must be read as Anvil's newbie area.

Title: Your First Day
Post by: Arbre on April 06, 2004, 01:33:24 PM
My first day was in December of 1996. I had watched my son (Phlipside)play and thought it looked like fun. I created my character Lys and was directed to the rabbit tunnels by him and had a fine time bashing little rabbits until I ran into a big mean one that killed me

I had observed Phlipside in the Knight's guild and decided that was the guild for me but after watching him in an attack or two, I decided to wait until a higher level to join.  I continued killing the little bunnies, and was appalled that my alignment had dropped to nasty.

I then noticed a shout from a Knight named Kyle. He was shouting for any newbies to join him at green. I did and he took me to the kobald caves to fix my alignment and then took me over to Blanka's area.  He also gave me a weapon and armour.  I was so impressed by his generosity.

Nanny was a bustling place back then, often it was too full to log in. I don't know what the max was, but it seemed to be around 90. With my old dial-up, I often went linkdead and found myself unable to log back on due to the number of players.  As frustrating as it was at times, the idea  of playing a computer game with so many other people was just too appealing to give up.

Post by: Iceblink on April 06, 2004, 11:51:58 PM
I believe that my first day was 10 years ago this month.

I logged on with two other people... Quit and Agentus.  We all used to hang out in an IRC channel called #tinydynamine... after a Cocteau Twins song.

Quit found the place first.  His name on IRC was LudwigVan.  We were all newbies on the same day though.

I was instantly taken in.

BTW... for those of you who remember him... Quit made new characters...  Roland... Dante... hehe.  He became quite famous.

We went around killing things and getting scared and meeting people... and I was a monk... my first character, Iceblink.  Quit left the guild and became a knight so he could hang out with Jane.  Hmm... that's another "whatever happened to..."

I was hurt pretty badly by some monster... a little thing probably... we were wandering around trying to prevent me from dying.  We ran into someone named Anna.  Quit said, "Can you help my friend?  He's hurt."  Anna said, "Oh no.  I am much too powerful."  I remember thinking, "Whoooooa.  Powerful."  I think that was the first time I met a wizard.

Anyway, somehow I healed, and we went back.  Then we tried to solve puzzles... I think we were trying to get across a river or something.  I don't really remember where this was, as the mud looks so different to me now.  I think it was some area that was west of green.... 5w I think... then some south and some more w.  Is there a red rubber ball somewhere?  That  seems to be popping up in my memory.

And maybe a game warden?  Does that sound right?

Anyway, that was my first day... oh... and there was a huge duel that happened that day... I think it was that day... definitely in my first few... Predator and Bonnetane, I believe.  Predator was scary.  Eeep!

Title: First day, frightful day. Oh what a day!
Post by: Elladan on April 07, 2004, 04:24:06 AM
I was a first year student in Linkoping fall of 94 and this goof in my class showed me the way down to the Lysator house on campus. Coming into the house I ran into this huge feller, later I was to learn his Nanny name to be Gruhl, and a couple of his friends who were also playing Nanny. They spoke very warmly of Nanny and I realized I had to give it a shot. So I logged on, joined mages guild and got, ahem, lost.

I ended up in Gleep's lair  :? , not very frightful, how bad can a Gleep be? Got instructions how to get out of there, back then, noone really wanted to go have tea with the Gleepster. Messed up the directions, ended up in a rift with a lion  . Oh joy! I musta pissed and moaned quite a bit about it, because before very long Gurk was there, had me join his party and raced back to grassie. I was overjoyed. Nothing like a first impression.

Funniest thing is I never found that lion again. Come to think of it I never even looked for it.

Interesting thought on that is that you had already come full circle and didn't know it. The reasoning: If memory serves me correctly, Gleep was one of Gruhl's beasts. How's that for small world? ;)

That would probably hold true, I know Gruhl did have some space up by Pet with his sword of madness. And Gleep and that sword went away just about the same time. *sniff*

Post by: garetjax on April 07, 2004, 04:40:47 PM
I remember joining Nanny in January 2001.  My first act in Nanny was to read the newbie booklet after which I wanted to get a little action in so I moved around a bit to explore.

Long story short, after I level up some in Blanka's, I stumble upon a character named Arraq with a nice eog blade (the flaming blue one).  After trying to start a conversation with him, he sliced me into bits and I found myself a ghost before I realized that I was in my first fight.

I had just lost about 30 minutes of work, a little fustrated, I was about to quit and perhaps start again the next say when I got a tell from someone named Alert.  After meeting him at green, he returned all the items I'd lost (tiger pelt, spartan helmet, torch,etc...) and 500 gold to boot.  I was shocked and amazed at this knight's kindness.

It was then that I was hooked (as well as knowing exactly which guild I wanted to join) and I haven't looked back since :)

Title: Your First Day
Post by: Carrion on April 08, 2004, 03:52:30 AM
Ah, the nostalgia...

I browsed my old diary just the other day, to see if I mentioned MUDing in the, somewhat, old days... I did!

First note I found was september 4th, 1992. I guess I started in august that year. I actually think Carrion was my very first char, even though at the time I had two more...

In the same corridor of student rooms I lived in for almost all my university time, there were several who was playing Nanny before me, and they talked about it a lot and wanted me to join in the fun. I understood I would get addicted, so I waited until I had finished the courses, and started my final project to get my MSc degree.

In Nanny my friends were known as Beowulf, Exidor, Fce (who changed to Asarius after wizzing) and Baldrick (not sure about the spelling, he too changed his name after wizzing, to Blackadder). They also had plenty of second chars, and it was a lot about player killing.

My first shaky steps on the Nanny soil took me to Anvil's Beginners' World, and the Kobold caves if I remember correctly. I soon found myself killed by a rabbit in Anvil's, and I thought I had heard that you had to wait a bit before getting revived, so I logged on several days to check if I had turned alive again! Finally I found out I had to PRAY to get back. I know that at least one player some time after this told me (s)he had noticed that I was 'always a ghost', probably thinking I was a bit too brave :)

In the beginning I mentally pictured Nanny around Ingis' Lane, and saw the Lane before me in a left-right manner, with the church at the left. This was very hard to get away from, but finally I had the more 'correct' picture of Ingis' Lane in a top-bottom manner, with the church at the top (top-north, bottom-south, west-left and east-right).

I won't write everything in this note, but a couple of more things...

* When I had 50000 coins, I knew I would never again have cash trouble
* First quest I helped with was 'Slay Lag', as I helped a player in the final
(?) killing (I would LOVE to remember who I helped)
* I'll check more closely, but wizzed in '93 and pretty quick I had my
area opened (Beowulf had his area just north of it, with the shop with
  the shaving-mirror)
* Player Killing... I never dared to go PK with Carrion, but numerous other
chars. Oh, the memories... Think this will have to wait, but it was
sooo easy to kill players in those days... Loki had no mirror, just type
'zzap loki' quickly ten times and Loki was dead and pissed off...

I must stop now, but I'm sure more will come...

   /Carrion

I found Nanny in May 1999 through serendippity. I googled "Galadriel" and just surfed on in. My first char was Storm, and after I had wandered about a bit getting lost and being attacked by a rooster for an hour or so, a brave and chivalrous knight asked me if I needed any help. I did, so Viken helped me get some free armour from Arnie's weapon store. (Even though no-one gave Arnie any free armour when he was young) Then Viken showed me around, and helped me find good things to kill, gave me dirs when i was lost and was very kind and helpful. We partied together almost every day after that. In fact, he was so kind and helpful, that in March 2000 he flew over to Australia to meet me. That was so much fun, he went back and packed his things, and moved in with me. NannyMud truly changed our lives!

Title: Your First Day
Post by: Valdor on April 08, 2004, 03:24:30 PM
I got introduced to Nanny by a classmade at the end of 1995. I was familiar with some text adventures from the old days, so I knew how it worked a bit, except that I found it really impressive to be playing the same game as 80 other people from around the world. So I logged on, chose the name Valdor...and I got lost. So I logged in again...and I got lost. I also remember that I found it scary to stand at green when so many people were passing by.

My classmate then told me where Anvil's newbie world was and I memorized the dirs. From then on, I knew church, green, the shop, and anvil's newbie world. I solved several puzzles there, fought fierce rabbits, and gained levels. I never got any coins and never asked anyone for them. (This didn't happen all on that first day though, on that first day I just got lost).

Title: Your First Day
Post by: poogie on April 11, 2004, 03:04:07 AM
In October 1994 I had a project to send an email to my professor to show that we could do it. I was in the computer lab with my roommate when this guy (Terin) turned to us and said "Do you mud?" Thinking that he meant some weird sexual thing my roommate and I looked at each other and cautiously said "No."
He explained Nannymud to us. Lisa wasn't interested in playing but I stayed and after a bit of contemplation I chose the name Poogus. The lead singer of Stone Temple Pilots, Scott Weiland, had a childhood imaginary friend named Poogus.
That first day I had a 'traumatic' experience (I was actually very prudish back then, I know it's hard to believe now. :p) when some guy offered to help me and took me up in some tree and attempted to mudsex me, giving me an STD (sexually transmitted disease) in the process.
After that I met some really nice mudders and ended up hanging out with them continuously...Andromeda, Nightmare, Yon, Solardria, Bucky, Meep, Jolena, Jaso Storin, Avis, Gobo and quite a few more. I would log on during the day when I was supposed to be in class and play for about 8-9 hours, then take a nap for 3-4,  play for 8-9 hours and take a nap for 3-4 hours. (I strongly advise against this type of schedule, it's really bad if you want to pass your classes.) As bad as that was for my grades it was an amazing experience and opened a whole new world of nerdom to me.
Before the days when multiplaying was banned I once logged all 7 of my characters at once and took them around in a party. That was so awesome, Bucky even joined me (us?) for a bit. *sigh*

I don't remember much from 9.5 years ago, but I remember the old damnie Morgan taking me under his wing when I first started.  I think within a week of me playing, I got Chuck to start and then he got a bunch of people from his dorm playing (Toupee, etc).  It was a grand old time with the Madison druids before the guild got severely hacked up.

Started in summer of '98, more or less by chance... wanted something to do while the calculations ran for the work I was doing that summer.  I don't remember the specific first day, but I know I ran into (was run over by?) a rather spammy axe pretty quick.  I adventured a bit, just trying to figure out what was what.  Arraquwain helped me out a lot at first - wish I could remember the other char I tagged along behind at the same time.  I wanted something more high-minded and virtuous than just running about grabbing gold, so I sought to become a knight; Mistress (I think) accepted me.  Knights seemed hard back then... didn't know a lot of evil kills and I got tired of dying in attacks.  Dropped out, joined kittens instead... there's a fun guild.  Played kittens with that character until they closed, then he wound up a monk without an angel.  I got so I could hear a dark coming three rooms away - vamps were always too sneaky though.  Joined knights again with another character who started out as a hunter, then finally wizzed...

Really brings back the memories.  A colossal "thanks" to everyone who's helped make Nanny such fun - as a newbie and as a wizard, for the gold and the experience and the quest hints and the spam and the chat and everything else.

I remember that a few years ago there were two pk monks, Tazor and I think another one with 'T' but not sure ... I am not sure wether I was not around enough or them, or what happened, I just know I never managed to kill either of them. :( (tried a couple of times).
If I'm not wrong I remember attacking Tazor at the Chemist when was healing someone ... but not sure of these, pretty far memories.

My first pk char was my vamp and I really enjoy (now) thinking of how things were back then. I managed to gather a good few deaths. :) Fastest was when I was killing an ugly rat at Nib's and Phade came and killed me in a hit and a falcon. That was pretty quick. Or when another knight (don't remember his name) was waiting for me outside of Blanka (and I was really low in guild too, not only in levels). He waved a wand at me, I just ran back ... ;) then after a while told Gurk about it and I believe he asked the knight to leave me be ... this was not a very nice thing of me, I should've had more pride to be able to avoid any contact with knights, but anyway, it was a long time ago.

Hmm. I started in October 97 or so.

I was introduced by my oldest RL friend, Strafe (or Fyghter as he later became known). I remember being in a party with him, Fuzzie and someone else whose name escapes me. I guess that's where I gained my love of spamming. I think we hunted in the Grey Havens, but I'm not sure. Anyway, I was dragged to the knights guild by Strafe, and told to join. Asterix did the honours, but didn't check that I actually knew how to find the place unaided. Cue my first attack some hours later, and me having to ask how to get to Camelot.

I was a terrible newbie. Of course, I've moved on since then. Honest.

Halloween 1999.

My girlfriend (Martinique) invited me to try NannyMUD.  I had absolutely no idea what a MUD was and played as Guest for a little while.  After reading the help to find out how to play, I got lost in some forest (forget where, but it had a knife laying on the ground and a bear ... that killed me).  Then I walked around as a ghost because I had no idea what else to do.  Eventually I met someone in the Adv. Guild (no idea who) that told me I really should make a real character.  So I made "Wolfenhex".  Shortly after that we decided to join Lepers (not sure if that was on the first day, but it was either that or the next day).

Every time I earned a new game/guild level I died almost right away.  I also died just short of 2000000 NP (which knocked me down to level 18 with about 60-70% of my NP gone -- pissed me off so much I quit NannyMUD until Meth and others got me to play again and helped me regain my status).  I was never a Paragon (I was originally told I couldn't be a wizard if I became one, so never became one because I wanted to be a wizard).  I was an Eglarest addict and would spend entire days (as in MUDing for 24-48 hours straight) there just killing elves.

I don't remember my first day, but I do remember my first char.

Daphnae was a knightess who almost made it to Paragon.  (I had to stop playing her as a knight because after my first child was born I couldn't risk leaving in the middle of an attack if Noelle suddenly needed me for something.)  I remember that Yavathol tested me for three hours, from 12 am to 3 am.  At the time, I thought surely that was an unusual amount of time to take to test someone, but Yavathol told me a couple of years later that he normally tests for two to three hours.  Wow.

Sorry about that, but you were one of the best prepared knights around because of it!

Well I have some fresh memories of my beginnings (not so long ago somewhere in august 2003). I found out about Nanny in a games magazine -a textonly game is this a joke?- So i went to a internet cafe and give it a try. I used that java telnet applet and it was difficult for me to even write because of spam(and my bad english and poor typing skills) that ruined what I typed and I had to start over.
So i start to move around green, looking for eq... but i found nothing... and I end up in a library, I opened a book and found myself in Greece, I instantly knew that I was lost ...then I discoverd that newbie booklet, and my first shout was "Help I am lost."
Then someone named Tredon  :)  replied to my shout and got me out of there.I was convinced he was a wizard bacause he could walk on a ranbow and draw runes on my forehead. This is the reason i joined the sims later on ... not a wize choice for an utter newbie.
I still rememember my first  fight[emptyhanded] with rat... he killed me first and when I came back armed with a knife i killed it(sweet revenge), but then a funny thing happend got infected by some disease from that rat and died again.
Ah and my first sword, although it was a simple broad sword in my eyes it was the best.
I found it along with a pack and an amulet next to an agressive bear(i knew someone died down there so i grabbed the eq and ran).
I didnt interact with players very much but i remember a monk named gildor (i think) that gave me 2k :D  when he saw my ghost in church. Then the first time I felt realy rich!
... what else what else ... ah yes later on i was annoyed that i couldnt kill myself(because of my level) in the suicide tower (I waited til lv18   to do it properly )
... and one more thing when i witnessed to a pk fight ... a knight was badly injured by a leper  :(
and retired in the safty of church there I saw the efects of rot and I realized that I could be killed by other players, the scent of danger was great, (I didnt know about the guardian angel ..bad angel   .. players should be allowed to mutilate each other without that kind of intervention  ).
In large lines this is the way of my first days in nanny and the reasons why i stayed. Now no longer a registered newbie I still bug players from time to time   I cant help it.  8)

December 14th, 1993, just before Christmas vacation during my senior year of high school, Pain finally broke down and told me he'd been playing this online text-adventure game, NannyMUD. I was itching to play, since I'd spent several hours on a Compuserve MUD a few years earlier (and paid a hefty fee for those few hours, too!) and had a blast.

So I dialed into the local University system and got the "host:" prompt. From there it was a mere few obfuscated commands--including a trip through Gopher--to Nanny. For FREE.

Pain was only level 13 or so, a Vampire title in the Damned Guild. Straight off I asked what guilds were available and had someone add me to Druids. Pain added me to his party and we were off.

The first fight I remember was with the delta crocodile (which is the reason I placed the Leper Colony near there). I waited in the next room while Pain killed it, since back then you didn't need to be in the same room as someone to get the XP for the kill. I was also getting 19 shares of the experience as a level 1. Every time we went to the pub to heal, Pain would chuck bottles at me.

Several levels and hours later, after taking me through Alexii's (in those days you could Heal Other with the Tome every minute or so and have full HP and SP quickly), we took out Fafnesbane and Fafner (yes, Fafner, before I corrected the spelling years later when I updated the area). We each had a Gram, then a very powerful weapon.

We were a few dragons into Hunt the Dragons when there was a reboot. The MUD had been up for just over 12 hours. A LONG time in those days, but then it WAS holiday break and most people didn't have internet at home back then. There were about 5 people on all break.

The next day I returned alone, level 14 or so, and did the entire Hunt the Dragons quest. Some Knight named Meathead would send out a shout every time he logged in or out of the game. I received some help from Mishima of the Mage Guild. He helped me find a few dragons and healed me in combat.

Good times.

I believe we used to call that 'rapid fire healing'

As for chucking bottles..was always funny to annoy others by having multiple damnies chuck bottles at them and hear that satisfying crash as it hit their head.

In late October of '99, I found NannyMUD through exploring lysator.liu.se, which I had found through Elfwood.

First time on the MUD, I logged in as Guest to get a feel for it, as I had no idea what a MUD was.  I played through the java client.  I think Guest had been a statue, and set to brief mode, because when I logged in that first time, there were no room descriptions at all and I had no clue where I was.  Just directions.  I thought it was some sort of maze game, and so just typed directions until I came to "a dark room" and couldn't go anywhere.  So I logged out, and and the next day tried again.  This time, I wandered somewhere west of green as Guest, tried to learn some about actions I could do, got in a fight with a rabbit, and was killed quickly.  I learned that I should wield things, and there was a broken bottle in the room, so I tried unsuccessfully to wield it as a ghost for a bit before I gave up.

I logged in again later, and this time made a character.  I went north of the church, being extremely careful this time, and a little frightened as I saw the arena, and somewhere northwest, I found a house or cave of sorts that was a newbie area (I think it was removed from the game not long after I found it).  I pressed a button, and was given a backpack and weapon and armour and instructions on how to fight rats.  That was quite a bit of help, but as I left there and explored some nearby, I was killed again and by the time I figured out how to become regenerated, my newbie eq was gone.  I went back to the newbie place, and was forbidden from receiving more stuff, so I wandered around frustratedly a bit, got lost in a place I couldn't get out of, and logged out.

So, thinking that I could only ever get more newbie eq if I made a new character, I made Martinique and started over again.  This time, instead of straying north immediately after getting my new eq, I hung around green and read the newbie booklet, talked with people and learned about feelings, tells, etc., learned that I could do things to get exp other than risk my life fighting those ferrocious rabbits, and just explored the village.  After getting the hang of the game some, I told Wolfenhex about this fun and challenging multi-user game I had found, and we started exploring the MUD together.

Somewhere in the course of this, I found out that the MUD was easier to use with a telnet client (probably from Wolfenhex), and I was introduced to those.  And someone told me I should join a guild, and I'd get some awesome powers that Adventurers' didn't have.  I tried for quite a bit to get recruited into -any- guild, and heard that druid's was good, but couldn't run down a druid to do it.  Finally, I think it was Lazarus who answered my call to be recruited, and he or someone else made us Lepers.  I had no clue how to play a guild at first, but I was -very- impressed with it, and the idea of having these neat spells.

We had lots of good times playing.  Exploring some, solving a few quests (but mostly getting irritated with them, as a newbie, although I still get frustrated with ones that insist on exact syntaxes that are hard to discover), dying often for a while, finding out what all those wizards I saw logged on did, and deciding to become one (probably through Avis' influence, as I remember him always being on the Lepers line), and partying a lot.  It seemed like we usually partied with a chef, until we stopped seeing him around at all (Slave was his name I believe), and any lepers that were around, probably others I can't remember at the moment.

Yep, lots of fun.

If memory serves me right, I believe that was Ulrik's newbie area. I miss that. I don't know if it was removed totally or placed on isle of lost empires. That part of his area was done well enough to help a new player out. :)

Aleea and Sindel had their area to the 'northwest' too, it was a house you entered and it had, if memory serves me with, newbie equipment too.

But I might be all mossy and foggy and way out there ;)

I think i remember that house too :) used to get free eq there as a newbie, too bad i could not sell it since it was worthy 0 coins :P
Carrion's neqbie equipment instead used to give me good cash, worthy of the long trip to reach that area  8)

There is a newbie area on the Isle of Lost Empires that belongs to Ulrik, although I don't remember if it has rats and that sort.  Perhaps its a smaller version, or more of a tutorial.  One does find some equipment in there, anyhow.

I was I think in my 1st or 2nd yer in the uny ('98 or '99) when I first heard of MUD. There was thi bunch of strage people that would stare all day long in a black screen... lots of white text was flying around 1st I thougt is was some kind of linux irc client. Then I went to a lab and there were more... I found out it was mud, and I quickly hated it (cause of the mudders I could never find a decent pc to play quake on). After that I started to look closer (wolfy was REALY picturing it all and explaining to me the beauty of some places, scaryness of other places what can I say he had a rich imagination :P )
In the begining of 2000 I think I decided it would not hurt to give it a try (how wrong was I) so I asked "how?" one of the nerds came to my pc told me to go away and after 2-3 mins I had a lvl 1 adenturer, named Guppy. I was at green and did not know any commands, then I got a tell "scrie ma: party join" and there I was in a party with 2 chapions of camelot and a high one but I'm not shure of that... anyway was a party of 4... I asked what should I do? the answer was "nothing now, wait I'll eplain it to you later" a few hours later I was a level 10 advanturer and still had no clue, I managed to leave the party and started exploring (with the wormchopper in the hand I found that wery funny) I was wrighting down every direction I took... and still got lost after a while of begging burgo got me back to green where another friend... (did not knew who that was back then) helped me out with some eq...
it was gloves... he gave me a ring that tleported me dunno where, after that I got mad and quited mudding for another wheek or so

That was my 1st day, soon after I mad cerber, a dedicated khorne that never managed to get bigger than rank 12 but had 2 bites at rank 2 :P and beshina that I still miss...

My first day?

While idling after a first year class i logged on at the suggestion of a friend.

Luckily or unluckily for me i ran into and started partying with one Rockoletta, Maeveen and Mikaa - i Nanny married one for a few years!

I survived and to this day idle and spam on Nanny.

Hayt.

In response to Carrion's question:

I'm not actually sure. It was between summer 1991 and summer 1992 I think, but I'm not that sure. My first recollection was being called an arsehole by someone called 'Voork', because I wasn't interested in joining the Scots.

Voork was later to incur the wrough of Qqqq, which wasn't good - (shame).

I raised a second knight char by joining a party with an RT called Sarayah (I think), and raised to level 10 by standing by arthur in the clouds and letting her kill while I advanced.

Banshee was a plain old Wiz, as was Brom. I don't think there were high wizzes as such.

Padrone was still around and the Druids had just about opened. Michaels amulet quest was still there, and Mysee's of course - and I remember the alien in the castle of Vador for some reason.

Other than that, I can't be that certain - its all a blur.

I played until about 1996/7 I think, then came back in late 1999 with my current chars. Wazzack and co having long since gone,

M

The names seem familiar. The players I remember from the first day that I started were Tankgirl, Reeferchild, Jynx, Rosebud and Soulman.

Players like Gerritt, Shoalin, Scarabee and Bonnetane came later. Some of those were very good players. Bonnetane was the best knight ever, in my opinion, and Gerritt the best questor. You actually had to do the work in those days.

That being said, some things were easier. In particular, XP and equipment was easier to get. For that reason, I have every respect for Polar and what he has achieved today.

My first day / night on was in spring of '94 I was in the basements of the old computer rooms in UCD doing spice annalysis of my amplifier for a project - while the huge monstosity of a computer with probably the same power as a 486 was crunching my design numbers I went on line.

I had been looking for MUDs for some time had played several and wound up realising not to bother the users with questions on how to play -

Finally I found Nanny - I really don't remeber if the newbie booklet was present at this time if it was I completely ignored it - I knew not to bother anyone or so I thought from other MUDs that I had attempted to play so I was slowly exploring hoping to find gold or a weapon figuring there can't be anything too dangerous close to the starting green.

I can't remember if I mixed up directions or if I was going to scavenge the Lars town trash pile (probably the second) for a weapon and was promptly killed by the trash monster -

It was a few weeks before I tried that deadly nanny MUD again but somehow it was better than all others I tried

I played to 96 with various different chars - kept forgetting username / passwords but never learnt and wrote them down.

My last char in 96 was "Inforapenny" I finanlly chose a char that wasn't a random assortment of letters.

Logged back a month ago thinking nanny would be gone and was really happy to see it still around and have got Drig to a reasonable level 11 - I think my highest prior char was a level 12 knight so soon Drig can be my most experienced char (and I actually wrote his name and password down this time) though he was an odd assortment of randomly punched keys again.

I cant remember when I started...I think it was at the end of 2000   I had been on internet for one year then, but mostly on a channel of irc. There one day a swedish friend told me he would show me something: nanny.

He had played a bit some years before, but never got really adicted...but I did and got stuck for a long time. It took me several days just to learn my way from the Village Green to the shop

Title: Re: Your First Day
Post by: Kei on July 19, 2006, 02:33:25 PM
I sort of ended up having two first days.

I ran into an issue in 96/97(somewhere in there, I think)(Snaf might remember better than I)(The Kittens still existed, and Khorne was a guild) with having to be at work doing REALLY boring things until all hours of the morning.  So, since I've always had a gift for doing multiple things at once I started poking around for something other than db entry/processing and envelopes and and and to do.  I found some mudlist or another and thought it sounded like the old BBS games only much cooler.
Started down the list.
So many of them I just ditched right off, due to pure undelimited PK.  Difficult and irritating to be wandering around for the first time trying to figure out what is what and where when people keep driveby beheading you.  Days and days into the hunt (the list being alphabet order) I fall into Nanny.

I don't remember if there was a newbie book or if I just ignored it or...  but I immediately started running around and dying - not even picking anything up yet, because I wanted to look around, and had left enough of a trail of death on some of the other muds I'd tried that actually trying to carry anything in initial exploration seemed foolish.

So I stumbled about, looking, and enjoying the fact that it wasn't players that were getting me killed, it was me.

I decided that the first guild I found I would take and keep.  Kei chose west as her first direction in questing for a guild.  And then south.  The landscape was interesting, and I think I initially avoided the altar, because such things make me nervous.  I think I found a statue, and died to something nearby it, but being fascinated by some of the things in the fields, I kept going back to that general vicinity.
Eventually Kei Khorned.  And stayed that way.  I think some of the denizens of the Kline were amused by the consistant death and return of the persistent little Khornelet.

Lot of names from that time, though I was sort of insular in who I interacted with (off the guildline) - Shin, Snafu, Orpheus, Moonchild, Joxer, Phade...  some others.  I remember "hearing" and "seeing" quite a few others.  I dragged my friend Sparrow in, who promptly created a kitten named Finn.....  later on, when I had an idea of things other than Khorne (Finn and Shin and Snaf having poked me out into the wider range of possibilities in Nanny utilizing the concept of "more than one character"), I dragged Jeci in as well.
So, after Kei, Lena and Valkris saw their first iterations as well.

I stopped playing for at least a year somewhere in the 99/00 area. (Shortly after noticing a young page named Bluejedi.)

When I came back in 2001, none of my characters existed anymore, and I was hesitant to return completely, just because I wasn't sure if anyone would remember me - and the chardissappearance was saddening.

Apparently I had been more memorable than I would have thought - as there were several who did remember - and who had all become very much more impressive in my absence (some of the names I had partied with had wizzed!).  I reacquainted myself by wandering around with the ever-Khorne and ever-nonplussed-by-death Kei - until Flair convinced me to bring V back.  She was recreated, and I spent a LONG day (I think it was 15+ hours) killing and questing and waiting for an RT.  The most beautiful occurance that entire day was that after I was interviewed, and reread the khelp (because I'd forgotten a bit or two in the intervening years, and the RT was quite thorough), and was knighted again - Gwalchmai still had my falcon.

(Hazy and wordy and imprecise in time)
